Dark Product Publishing and Just Purkey Games have announced that their open-world “heavy metal horror game,” The Axis Unseen, will be available on PlayStation 5 starting December 4th.
Nate Purkeypile, the sole developer of the game The Axis Unseen, released it on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on October 22, 2024. Purkeypile previously worked at Bethesda Game Studios, contributing to popular titles like Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield. A version for Xbox Series is in development, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Here is an overview of the game, via Just Purkey Games:
■ About
The Axis Unseen is a unique game that mixes the thrill of hunting with a mysterious, immersive world and a dark fantasy setting. You play as the last hunter standing against ancient creatures from myth who have emerged from another realm.
Track monsters using supernatural senses. Wield elemental arrows. Steal powers from your prey.
Hunt… or be hunted.
Your home village has been destroyed, and the barriers between worlds are collapsing. Ancient, terrifying beasts are now crossing into our reality. You’ll need your bow, hunting skills, and the abilities you gain from defeated monsters to unravel the secrets of a timeless realm and prevent these creatures from breaking free.
Key Features
- Open-World Hunting Horror – Explore a hand-crafted world filled with creatures pulled from global folklore.
- Enhanced Sense Powers – Track scent, read heat signatures, and perceive supernatural visual cues.

A One-Man Open-World Project
I was so impressed when I heard Nate left Bethesda back in 2021 – he wanted to go back to really making games himself, you know? And over the last three years, he’s done just that! He literally built an entire open world all by himself. Seriously, he did everything – designed the creatures, created all the game mechanics, wrote the code, composed the music and landscapes, and gave the whole thing its unique feel. It’s incredible!
I was really blown away to learn he started developing this incredible new sound he calls ‘primitive metal’! It’s a collaboration with Clifford Meyer, and get this – it’s over 90 minutes of music that actually changes depending on what’s happening in the game. It’s so immersive and really adds a whole new level to the experience.
Supporting facts from Nate’s career include:
- Early work on BloodRayne 2, Æon Flux, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
- Valedictorian graduate of DigiPen Institute of Technology.
- Post-launch of The Axis Unseen on PC in 2024, Nate began ideating his next project while traveling cross-country in an RV.
Players and critics alike loved the 2024 PC release, especially its immersive atmosphere, detailed world, and the exciting, nerve-wracking way it plays – constantly making you feel like both hunter and hunted.
