Michael J. Fox, a five-time Emmy Award winner, is preparing to appear as a guest star on a show in January. Before his return to acting after a five-year break, fans can revisit one of the most acclaimed science fiction movie series directed by
As a huge movie fan, I’m thrilled to hear that all three Back to the Future films are coming to Netflix on November 1st! This franchise, directed by Robert Zemeckis, really cemented Fox’s place as a major star in Hollywood – it’s amazing to think about how popular it was. And it’s funny to remember he was also starring in Family Ties at the same time! It all started back in 1985 with the first Back to the Future movie, which he made with Robert Gale. It’s the story of Marty McFly, a teenager played by Fox, who accidentally travels back in time in a DeLorean created by his eccentric scientist friend, Doc Brown, brilliantly played by Christopher Lloyd.
Following the success of the 1985 film, two sequels, Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990), were quickly released. During filming, Michael J. Fox also played Alex P. Keaton in the popular TV show Family Ties. Recently, Fox published his memoir, Future Boy, and discussed with People magazine the challenges of filming both Back to the Future and Family Ties simultaneously. He explained in his book that he would film Family Ties during the day and then work on Back to the Future at night.
He explained that although he was the filmmakers’ first choice for Marty McFly in Back to the Future, the creator of Family Ties, Gary David Goldberg, initially prevented him from taking the role due to scheduling issues. Eric Stoltz was originally cast, but later left the film, which allowed Goldberg to approve Fox’s participation.
Back to the Future was ‘High Stakes for Everybody’
In the book, I discuss the importance of everyone on a film project being on the same page, speaking the same ‘language,’ so to speak. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to establish that connection this time. I had to jump right in and trust that my work would fit with what everyone else was doing, which put a lot of pressure on all of us. I simply wanted to do a good job. There was also some tension on set because my co-star, Lea Thompson, was friends with the actor I replaced, Michael J. Fox, and wasn’t thrilled about working with me, as I was known as a TV actor at the time. She’s admitted she wasn’t prepared to work with someone from television. She’s been very open about feeling like I didn’t belong and being upset that her friend was no longer part of the movie.”
Michael J. Fox’s career really took off after the first Back to the Future film, making him a widely recognized star. He recently noted that the movies resonate with audiences even more now than they did when they came out 40 years ago.
Director Christopher Lloyd pointed out that bullying takes many forms. He explained that while the character Biff Tannen is a classic bully in the film, other things can also be bullying – like the passage of time, or even personal struggles such as his own battle with Parkinson’s disease. Ultimately, he believes the film resonates with audiences because it’s about facing challenges with courage and resilience, and finding the strength to fight back. He feels people are connecting with these themes in ways they might not have expected.
The Back to the Future trilogy will hit Netflix on Nov. 1.
