Production has officially begun on The Batman: Part II. Director Matt Reeves excited fans by sharing a first look – a camera test showing the Batmobile driving through a snowy Gotham City. This has sparked a lot of discussion, with many believing the snow suggests the villain Mr. Freeze might appear in the movie.
Many DC Comics fans believe they’ve figured out which Batman story is inspiring the next film from director Matt Reeves and writer Mattson Tomlin (known for Project Power and Terminator Zero). They’re hoping they’re right, as it’s considered one of the greatest Batman stories ever written.
Theory: The Batman 2 is Based On Mr. Freeze’s “Heart of Ice” Story Arc

On September 7, 1992, the animated series Batman: The Animated Series aired an episode called “Heart of Ice” that dramatically changed the way people thought about the Batman universe. The episode featured Batman (voiced by Kevin Conroy) investigating a string of daring robberies where the crime scenes—and unfortunate bystanders—were left frozen solid. As Batman tracked the pattern of thefts, he realized the villain, Mr. Freeze, was building a massive ice cannon with the goal of freezing all of Gotham City. During a confrontation with Freeze at GothCorp, where he attempted to prevent the final piece of the cannon from being stolen, Batman was nearly defeated by Freeze’s powerful weapon.
The episode became much more tragic as Bruce Wayne learned the story behind Mr. Freeze. He discovered that Ferris Boyle, the CEO of GothCorp, callously cancelled funding for scientist Victor Fries’ groundbreaking research on cryogenics. Fries was desperately trying to save his terminally ill wife, Nora. When Boyle tried to shut down the lab, endangering Nora’s life, a struggle ensued. Fries was exposed to his own freezing chemicals, drastically lowering his body temperature and damaging his brain, forcing him to live in a specialized cooling suit. Driven by this loss, he became “Mr. Freeze,” seeking revenge on a world he blames for stealing everything he loved.
How The Batman: Part II Could Do A Proper Version of Mr. Freeze

The Batman: The Animated Series episode “Heart of Ice” dramatically changed how fans viewed the character of Mr. Freeze, much like the upcoming Clayface movie is doing now. Before this episode, Mr. Freeze was seen as a silly villain, but the animated series portrayed him as both terrifying and heartbreaking. This complex version of Victor Fries was a stark contrast to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comedic portrayal in the 1997 film Batman & Robin, and it ultimately influenced the character in the DC comic books themselves, leading them to adopt a similar, more nuanced depiction.
Some fans question whether Matt Reeves’ dark and gritty take on The Batman would be a good fit for a character like Mr. Freeze. However, there’s a strong argument to be made that it actually works well. Reeves has built The Batman universe around the style of classic Film Noir, portraying Bruce Wayne as a troubled, unconventional detective. He operates in a city filled with bizarre criminals, corrupt figures, and dangerous women, where truly good people are rare. This setting could actually be a compelling backdrop for Mr. Freeze’s story.

The new direction for these films doesn’t rule out Mr. Freeze as a villain in The Batman 2 – in fact, he’d be a great fit. Director Matt Reeves successfully reimagined The Riddler in The Batman, turning a traditionally silly villain into a truly terrifying serial killer, making some viewers question if the movie was appropriate for a PG-13 audience.
The sequel to The Batman could easily follow the style of the first movie, and a compelling villain could be Mr. Freeze. He could be portrayed as a serial killer who uses extreme cold to eliminate his victims, preserves bodies using freezing methods, or does both. Director Matt Reeves could simplify the traditional Mr. Freeze backstory – ditching the suit and gun – while still keeping the core of Victor Fries’ tragic tale: a brilliant scientist and loving husband wronged by his company, seeking vengeance. Reeves could even connect this new take on the villain to the events of the first film, perhaps by having Nora Fries’ cryopreservation damaged during the Riddler’s attack and the subsequent flooding of Gotham. This approach would successfully combine elements of Batman: The Animated Series with the grounded realism of The Batman, which would likely please many fans.
I’m so hyped for The Batman 2! The cast they’re building is incredible – Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent is perfect casting, and I’m really excited to see Scarlett Johansson as his wife, Gilda. Plus, Charles Dance is joining as Harvey’s dad! It’s awesome that Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, and Jeffrey Wright are all coming back as Penguin, Alfred, and Gordon too. And the buzz is that we might see the Court of Owls as the big bad guys instead of Mr. Freeze, which honestly sounds even more interesting!
The next Batman movie, The Batman: Part II, is scheduled to come out on October 1, 2027. Fans on the ComicBook Forum are currently speculating about whether the character Mister Freeze will be included in the sequel.
