The Batman 2’s Harvey Dent Actor Report Continues a 37-Year Dark Knight Trend (That Includes Heath Ledger’s Joker)

Recent news has completely changed what we thought we knew about the next Batman movie. For months, fans have speculated Sebastian Stan would play Harvey Dent, eventually becoming the villain Two-Face. There were also reports that Scarlett Johansson would star as his wife, Gilda, and Charles Dance as his father, Christopher – but none of this was ever officially confirmed.

Recent reports suggest a change of plans: Stan is now expected to play Victor Zsasz, the villain. Zsasz is a serial killer known for carving marks into his skin representing each victim. He made quick appearances in Batman Begins and had a smaller role in Birds of Prey, but this would be his first time as a main villain in a Batman film.

Adding to the surprises, reports suggest Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance won’t be portraying established DC characters, but rather entirely new ones created from combining existing elements. Most surprisingly, Brian Tyree Henry is playing Harvey Dent. While many thought Stan was ideal for the role of Gotham’s District Attorney, casting Henry is an unexpected move that could actually be brilliant.

Batman Movies Have A Successful History Of Unexpected Castings

Choosing Henry as Harvey Dent is an unexpected move, and it’s not simply because he’s Black. Billy Dee Williams played the role previously without issue, and race shouldn’t be a factor now. Henry also differs physically from how Dent is usually depicted, and his well-known work on Atlanta might seem like a departure from the character. Stan, however, fits the traditional image of what people expect Harvey Dent to look like. Interestingly, past Batman films have often succeeded with surprising casting choices – even when those choices initially faced criticism.

When Michael Keaton was cast as Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film, many fans were upset. He was famous for comedies like Mr. Mom and Beetlejuice, so people questioned whether he could play the dark and serious Bruce Wayne. Warner Bros. received thousands of protest letters, and even Bob Kane, one of Batman’s creators, doubted the decision. But Keaton ultimately proved everyone wrong! He turned out to be a perfect fit for the role, and many believe he best portrayed the contrast between Bruce Wayne’s public persona and his alter ego, Batman.

Let’s talk about Heath Ledger’s Joker, because honestly, it blew everyone away. On paper, he didn’t seem like the obvious pick – I mean, he was known for more romantic and dramatic roles at that point. There was even some initial negativity, but he completely transformed himself. He became this agent of chaos, delivering a truly twisted and unforgettable villain performance. For me, he completely redefined what it meant to play the Joker, and honestly, I don’t think anyone has come close to matching that level of brilliance since – and maybe never will.

Looking at The Batman, it wasn’t long ago people doubted Robert Pattinson’s casting, similar to past superhero casting debates. However, the concern wasn’t about his recent work, but rather his association with the Twilight films. Despite that, Pattinson spent the following ten years taking on diverse and compelling roles in independent movies, proving himself to be a talented and versatile actor. So, it’s no surprise he delivered a great performance as Batman.

Brian Tyree Henry Could Be A Great Harvey Dent (& So Would Sebastian Stan)

Putting aside the negativity surrounding Henry Cavill potentially playing Harvey Dent/Two-Face, many people are questioning if he’s right for the role simply because it’s different from what he usually does. This seems to ignore his proven talent as an actor – there’s no reason to think he couldn’t pull it off. A big part of what makes Harvey Dent compelling is his charisma and ability to appear as Gotham’s hopeful hero, someone people genuinely like. Cavill has that same natural charisma, so portraying a likable and morally upright Dent before his transformation wouldn’t be an issue for him.

When it comes to casting Two-Face, several of Henry’s past roles feel particularly relevant. In If Beale Street Could Talk, he powerfully portrays a man deeply affected by his experiences in prison. And in Widows, he plays a character who adopts different personas – sometimes even frighteningly so – as a criminal involved in politics. He possesses many of the qualities needed to portray Two-Face effectively, offering potential for a performance that respects the comic book origins while also bringing something new to the role, considering we’ve already seen two live-action versions.

Stan would also be fantastic in the role, without question – he possesses all the necessary qualities. However, choosing someone unexpected like Henry could lead to a more unique and captivating performance. Likewise, Stan is a strong contender for Zsasz; he’s capable of diving into the character’s darkness and convincingly portraying that level of psychopathy.

We don’t know for sure what’s happening with the casting – it could be Stan is actually Dent and Henry is Harvey Bullock, which would be amazing! – but we should remember Matt Reeves has consistently delivered great work. Plus, The Batman 2 already boasts a fantastic and incredibly promising cast.

The Batman: Part II will be released in theaters on October 1st, 2027.
