It’s rare for a TV show to be consistently excellent throughout its entire run. Even the most acclaimed shows usually have a few episodes that aren’t as strong. For example, fans of Breaking Bad often disagree about the episode “Fly,” the Columbus Day episode of The Sopranos was criticized for being too heavy-handed with its message, and the final season of The Wire divided viewers with its dramatic and sometimes unbelievable storylines.
Every TV show gets evaluated differently. How good an episode is often depends on how good the whole series has been. If a show starts strong, people will expect more from later episodes than they would from a new or less impressive series. For example, an episode of The Wire will likely be held to a higher standard than one from The Big Bang Theory.
It’s rare for a TV show to stay consistently good throughout its run, but shows like Tony Gilroy’s Andor – a compelling Star Wars story with an anti-fascist message – manage to do just that. While not every episode is a standout, none are truly weak. The same can be said for the current hit series The Bear on FX and Hulu. The show’s first two seasons were exceptionally well-received, with many calling them some of the best seasons of television ever made.
People acted like the show The Bear had drastically declined after seasons 3 and 4, even though those seasons were still really good, just not exceptional. The reality is, there aren’t any truly bad episodes – some are simply stronger than others.
The Bear Doesn’t Have A Single Bad Episode
While not every episode of The Bear reaches the heights of standouts like “Forks” or “Fishes,” the show hasn’t had a truly weak installment. Even when episodes focus too much on a character like Fak, center on less compelling storylines, or feel a bit unrealistic, the writing remains excellent, the acting is believable, and the series perfectly blends humor and tension. Each episode still manages to deliver laughs, emotional moments, great music, and that signature, energetic chaos that makes the show so compelling.
The third season of The Bear starts with a surprisingly weak episode. It spends too much time inside Carmy’s head, doesn’t reveal any new information, and avoids addressing the cliffhangers from the previous season’s finale. However, the episode is brilliantly edited, using montages effectively. Even though we already know the information presented, the way it’s visually assembled creates a compelling look at Carmy’s state of mind before the story moves forward. Even when The Bear isn’t at its best, it still manages to be engaging.
The Bear Has One Of The Best Casts On TV
What really makes The Bear so compelling is its incredible cast. The actors have amazing chemistry, each bringing a unique energy – from Jeremy Allen White’s quiet intensity to Ayo Edebiri’s sharp wit and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s boisterous personality. While some storylines haven’t quite worked, the performances are consistently outstanding.
With The Bear heading into its fifth and final season, now is a great time to start watching. It can be a challenging show to begin with, as it quickly creates a sense of tension. However, it’s truly one of the best TV shows of recent years. Like any show that’s been on for a while, it has its ups and downs, but overall, The Bear is consistently excellent.
