As a film lover, there’s nothing quite like the Oscars – it’s the ultimate recognition in our world. But let’s be real, a lot of winning films fade from memory. When the Best Animated Feature category was added over 20 years ago, though, some truly iconic movies have won, and we still watch them constantly! Think Shrek, The Incredibles, Frozen, and more recently, Flow. And just recently, two other animated winners have found new homes on streaming, though you’ll need a couple of different subscriptions to enjoy them both.
On November 1st, several streaming services updated their offerings, and HBO Max added the animated film Happy Feet. The movie, which earned a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 76% approval score from critics, won an Academy Award in 2006. It stars Elijah Wood as Mumble, a penguin who can’t sing, but is a surprisingly good tap dancer.
Fans of animated movies can now enjoy Rango on Paramount+ and Tubi as of November 1st. This funny Western, directed by Gore Verbinski, features Johnny Depp as the voice of Rango, a chameleon who unexpectedly becomes the center of attention in a lawless frontier town. The film has been highly praised, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It also grossed $246 million worldwide.
Happy Feet and Rango Deserve Their Oscar Wins

It’s easy to forget that both Happy Feet and Rango actually won Oscars. They weren’t made by the usual big animation studios – Happy Feet came from the Australian visual effects company Animal Logic and was distributed by Warner Brothers, while Rango was from Industrial Light & Magic and distributed by Paramount Pictures – which made their wins a bit of a surprise. However, both films are truly deserving of their Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature.
Beyond its critical acclaim, Rango is a truly unique animated film that redefined what animation could do. It remains notable for its incredibly creative and distinctive visual style, with director Gore Verbinski using techniques like realistic lighting, camera angles, and set design to make it feel almost like a live-action movie.
The Academy Award win for Happy Feet sparked debate, as it competed against strong contenders like Disney/Pixar’s Cars for Best Animated Feature. The film was innovative, using a new motion capture technique that combined computer animation with live footage – a choice that some found controversial – to vividly portray the world of Antarctic penguins. It also boasted a memorable soundtrack featuring popular songs by artists like Prince, Elvis Presley, and Queen.
Other Animated Movies Now Streaming
November is shaping up to be a great month for animated movie fans! In addition to Happy Feet, HBO Max now has Ice Age: Continental Drift and Puss In Boots available. And if you’re looking for free options, Tubi is streaming Shrek Forever After, The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2, and The Smurfs: The Lost Village.
