The Best Dystopian Franchise of the 2010s Is About To Leave Peacock and Stop Streaming

As a movie lover, I’m really excited about what Peacock is adding in March! They’re loading up with tons of great stuff – I was thrilled to already see The Big Lebowski and John Wick: Chapter 4 pop up, and I’m especially looking forward to Wicked: For Good finally hitting the streamer. But it’s not all additions, unfortunately. There’s also a bunch of content leaving, and I’m making a point to catch the best dystopian series from the last decade before it disappears from Peacock!

Among dystopian film series of the 2010s, The Hunger Games was the most successful. Based on Suzanne Collins’s novels and starring Katniss Everdeen, the series began in 2012 and has earned over $3 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing franchises ever. Sadly for fans, the original four Hunger Games movies – The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Part 1, and Mockingjay – Part 2 – will soon be removed from Peacock, and likely from other streaming services as well.

The Hunger Games Is the Definitive YA Dystopian Franchise

As a huge film fan, I remember the 2010s being absolutely filled with dystopian movies, and honestly, The Hunger Games really kicked everything into high gear. It hit at just the right time, following the success of franchises like Twilight and Harry Potter, and tapped into this growing appetite for those kinds of stories. What was really interesting about The Hunger Games though, was how it wasn’t afraid to get dark. It dealt with really tough stuff – sacrifice, trauma, political issues – which was a step beyond a lot of other YA adaptations. Plus, the movies had a fantastic cast, a compelling female lead, and they built a world that felt incredibly real. It was an instant success and, for me, it really raised the bar for what a blockbuster teen movie could be.

All four of the original Hunger Games movies were well-received by critics, with the lowest-rated, Mockingjay – Part 2, still earning a solid 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. The franchise remains popular today, more than ten years after the initial series concluded, as evidenced by the recent return of The Hunger Games to the big screen. After the success of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2023, a new film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which tells the story of Haymitch and the 2nd Quarter Quell, is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.

Where to Stream The Hunger Games Franchise After It Leaves Peacock?

After leaving Peacock, the original Hunger Games movies will only be available to watch by buying physical copies or renting or buying them digitally, as they aren’t currently planned to appear on any other streaming services this month. However, the newest movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will remain available on Peacock even after the original four films are removed. There’s also a chance the first four movies could become available on another streaming platform in April or soon after.
