Despite what some might think, action movies are still thriving, and the last few years have brought some truly thrilling new releases. A recent sequel, released in 2025, is a great example – it lived up to the hype. While it didn’t quite reach the same box office success as the original, critics loved it even more. It’s a rare modern sequel that fully embraces the old-school idea of going bigger and better, and it pulls it off beautifully. Now that it’s available to stream, it’s quickly become one of the most popular movies online.
The Finnish action movie Sisu: Road to Revenge, a sequel to the popular 2022 film Sisu, is now available on HBO Max and is quickly becoming a hit. It’s currently the second most popular movie on the platform, closely behind Jurassic World Rebirth, according to streaming data from Flix Patrol. This is particularly impressive considering the film didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, earning $9.8 million worldwide with a production budget of $12.2 million. This is a decrease from the original Sisu film, which earned $14 million on a $7 million budget.
Set during the final months of World War II, Sisu follows Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila), a seasoned Finnish prospector, who encounters a retreating battalion of Nazis in northern Finland. After the Nazis steal his gold, they realize Aatami is far more than just a miner—he’s a former commando embodying sisu, a Finnish concept representing incredible courage and unwavering determination even when facing impossible odds. Aatami then embarks on a relentless mission to reclaim his gold, vowing to eliminate every Nazi in his way.
Sisu: Road to Revenge Plot Details & Critics Score Explained

In Sisu: Road to Revenge, Aatami returns to the site where his family was tragically killed during the war – their former home. He plans to move the house and start a new life. But his past comes back to haunt him when the Red Army commander responsible for the murders (Stephen Lang, known from Avatar) reappears, intent on finishing the job. This sets off a thrilling and action-packed chase across the country, promising a brutal and unforgettable showdown.
Jalmari Helander wrote and directed both Sisu films, and they’ve turned Finnish actor Jorma Tommila into an action star, much like Liam Neeson after Taken. Although the movies didn’t make a huge amount of money at the box office, critics loved them. Both Sisu and Sisu: Road to Revenge have a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and audiences give them scores of 88% and 87% respectively, which shows how much viewers enjoy the series. Sisu: Road to Revenge also adds exciting car chases to the action, offering something new while staying true to the spirit of the original.
Lots of action movie fans believe Sisu: Road to Revenge doesn’t get enough attention, so it’s great to see it now available on streaming. Hopefully, this will lead to the director getting a chance to make a third film and finish the series.
Sisu: Road to Revenge is now streaming on HBO Max.
