
Sherlock Holmes is on the case yet again.
Movie history is full of well-known detectives. Kenneth Branagh has played Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot in three films, and Daniel Craig has captivated audiences as Benoit Blanc, the charming detective from Rian Johnson’s Knives Out series. Still, no detective is as iconic as Sherlock Holmes.
I’ve always been fascinated by Sherlock Holmes – he truly is the most famous detective in all of fiction! It’s been amazing to see him brought to life in so many films and TV series. I especially loved Benedict Cumberbatch’s take on the character in the BBC’s Sherlock, and Robert Downey Jr. was fantastic in the two movies Guy Ritchie directed. I was starting to lose hope for another big screen adventure with Downey Jr., but it’s so exciting that Ritchie is back with a new Sherlock project that expands on that world!
According to data from FlixPatrol, Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes is currently the tenth most popular movie on Prime Video in the U.S. Released in theaters on December 25, 2009, it was the first film in the Sherlock Holmes series. It’s joined on the Prime Video charts by another Guy Ritchie film, the spy thriller Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, while The Bluff is currently the most-watched movie.
The first Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr. earned $524 million around the world, proving to be a successful launch for the character. A sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was released on December 16, 2011, and made $543.8 million. Critics generally liked the 2009 film, giving it a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a third Sherlock Holmes movie for over ten years, as it’s been a long time since the second film came out. While updates about the potential sequel have surfaced and disappeared over the years, Susan Downey recently told Collider on October 2, 2025, that she’s still hoping to make it happen, saying, “I would love to bring a third Sherlock to the world.”
Although a third Sherlock Holmes movie isn’t available yet, Guy Ritchie is still expanding the detective’s universe. On March 4th, the first season of Young Sherlock, featuring eight episodes, became available on Prime Video. This new series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, offering a fresh take on the character compared to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal.
Guy Ritchie directed and helped produce the series Young Sherlock. The release of this new show probably helped Robert Downey Jr.’s first Sherlock Holmes movie climb into the Top Ten Movies list on Prime Video in the US. Now, fans of mysteries are eagerly awaiting news about a second season of Young Sherlock and hoping to find out if Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes again.
