Netflix has a large number of movies, but it hasn’t historically had many superhero options. Beyond new releases from Sony and the occasional DC film from Warner Bros., Netflix typically cycles through the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, this week saw a surprising addition: what many consider to be the best Marvel movie of the last ten years is now available on the platform.
The popular animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won an Oscar, was once available on Netflix through an agreement with Sony Pictures, but it hadn’t been streaming for a while. Netflix didn’t mention its return in recent updates, so it was a surprise to see it suddenly appear among the Top 10 movies on the platform this week.
Seven years ago, Into the Spider-Verse revolutionized comic book movies, demonstrating the boundless potential of the medium. Its groundbreaking visual style redefined animation, bringing comic books to life like never before. The film also proved that stories involving multiple universes can be successful, provided they remain focused on compelling characters.
Now that Into the Spider-Verse is back on Netflix, it stands out as the only Spider-Man film not included with most other Marvel movies on Disney+. Disney+ has become the main streaming home for Marvel films.
