Few medical sitcoms have reached the same level of success as Scrubs. Starring Zach Braff, the show originally aired on NBC (and later ABC) and told the story of a medical intern at Sacred Heart Hospital. It became a standout in the genre during its run from 2002 to 2010. Now, almost 15 years later, with ABC releasing a new Scrubs revival, NBC has re-entered the medical sitcom world with a compelling new series, currently available on Netflix.
If you loved Scrubs and are looking for a funny, new medical comedy, check out St. Denis Medical. This NBC show, which premiered in 2024, is quickly becoming a fan favorite as a successor to Scrubs. Currently in its second season, all 18 episodes of the first season are now available on Netflix as of April 1st. The show is a mockumentary that follows the stressed-out doctors and nurses at a struggling hospital in Oregon as they try to care for patients while also staying sane. It has a solid 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
NBC’s St. Denis Medical Is the Perfect Scrubs Replacement
If you loved Scrubs, you should check out St. Denis Medical. It’s a fantastic show that blends the quirky humor of The Pitt with the relatable workplace dynamics of The Office, all set within a realistically chaotic and underfunded hospital. St. Denis Medical feels like a natural continuation of the spirit of Scrubs, which ended in 2010, and it avoids the challenges of a revival by offering a fresh, modern take on the medical comedy for today’s audiences. It’s a grounded successor that doesn’t try to recapture the past, but builds something new.
Compared to the often silly and fantastical moments in Scrubs and its continuation, St. Denis Medical offers a more realistic and somewhat bleak look at hospital life. The show finds humor in the everyday struggles of a modern hospital – things like limited funding and frustrating paperwork. Like Scrubs, it centers on a close-knit work family, particularly the nursing staff, and balances lighthearted moments with genuinely emotional and high-stakes situations. Many of the storylines – dealing with challenging patients, difficult bosses, and personal stress – will feel familiar to Scrubs fans, making St. Denis Medical a good choice for those seeking something both comforting and new.
What’s New on Netflix?
With 18 episodes now available on Netflix, viewers can enjoy the medical drama St. Denis Medical for quite a while. But there’s plenty more to watch after that! Netflix added a lot of new content on April 1st, including films like American Gangster, Kindergarten Cop, the Mission: Impossible series, and Smokey and the Bandit. They also added the first season of the new sitcom Happy’s Place, featuring Reba McEntire.
