The Best Punisher Scene Of All Time Needs to Happen In This Upcoming MCU Movie

With his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in season one of Daredevil: Born Again, fans are hoping to see a fantastic Punisher scene inspired by the comics. While Jon Bernthal wasn’t initially announced as part of the cast, there’s still a chance he could be added in future announcements over the next few months.

Jon Bernthal’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday will be small. His character, the Punisher, isn’t a major player in the comic book storyline that leads to Secret Wars. However, there’s one amazing Punisher scene that Marvel Studios is eager to bring to life, and Avengers: Doomsday provides the ideal setting to do so.

The Punisher Doesn’t Necessarily Fit With The Avengers: Doomsday Narrative

The next Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will kick off the Multiverse Saga and heavily feature storylines involving alternate universes. This is largely because the cast from the X-Men movies (from a different universe than the main Marvel Cinematic Universe) will be joining Earth’s Avengers to fight Doctor Doom, as confirmed by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. Considering it’s the first of two movies designed to wrap up the Multiverse Saga, a focus on the multiverse makes perfect sense.

The Punisher, and heroes like him who focus on local crime, usually aren’t involved in huge, universe-level conflicts. He generally deals with criminals operating on the streets, like Kingpin or Jigsaw, and prefers to work alone. While he’s had some fun team-ups, notably with Daredevil, his brutal approach often isolates him from heroes who prefer less violent solutions.

I’m really excited about how the Punisher interacted with Spider-Man in his first movie, and it sounds like the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going to be a more down-to-earth story with smaller-scale villains – nothing like Doctor Doom! Even though Spider-Man is now used to fighting huge, cosmic threats and would probably be a better fit for an Avengers: Doomsday movie, I’m still hoping they can include the Punisher somehow, maybe even recreate that amazing scene from the 2015 Secret Wars comics. That would be incredible!

Punisher’s Villain Massacre Scene Can Be Recreated In Avengers: Doomsday

The movie Avengers: Doomsday will kick off the story of the Multiverse Saga’s main villain, Doctor Doom, and directly connect to Avengers: Secret Wars. This approach is similar to how Avengers: Infinity War led into Avengers: Endgame. Avengers: Doomsday is expected to show the culmination of events that have been building throughout the Multiverse Saga, and will establish the setting for Avengers: Secret Wars – a world called Battleworld, which is controlled by Doctor Doom.

This opens the possibility of including a brief but impactful scene with the Punisher and various Marvel villains in Avengers: Doomsday. This scene, originally from Secret Wars #1, depicts Kingpin hosting a gathering of street-level villains in a penthouse. They’re shown enjoying a final drink, acknowledging both their own failure and the impending doom of their enemies, knowing the universe is about to end.

Hearing about the party, the Punisher decides to spend his last moments fighting crime. He crashes the gathering of villains, refusing to let them have any peace before the inevitable destruction arrives, and takes them down himself.

For most superheroes, winning against minor villains would have felt like a hollow victory, considering the larger threat looming. But for the Punisher, this was the perfect ending. He finally accomplished his life’s work – cleaning up New York’s worst criminals – completing his story just before everything fell apart, in the most dramatic way imaginable.

How The Punisher’s Secret Wars Scene Could Play Out In Avengers: Doomsday

Now that Kingpin is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to Daredevil: Born Again, a dramatic scene from the comics could be directly recreated in Avengers: Doomsday. This also offers a great chance for some defeated MCU villains to make one last appearance, as many of them operate on a smaller, street-level scale. Some ideal attendees at Kingpin’s potential ‘end of the world’ gathering include:

  • Bullseye
  • Helmut Zemo
  • Adrian Toomes/Vulture
  • Mac Gargan/Scorpion
  • Justin Hammer
  • Sidewinder
  • Sonny Burch
  • Batroc the Leaper
  • The Leader

This list excludes MCU villains who might still be alive, even if they appear to be dead, like Mysterio. It also doesn’t include villains who will appear in upcoming MCU projects before Avengers: Doomsday, such as season two of Daredevil: Born Again, Vision Quest, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Regardless, even a short amount of screen time could provide a satisfying conclusion for both The Punisher and popular MCU villains.

The story could also introduce the main actors. This would be similar to what happened in Thunderbolts, where we first see the already-known New Avengers just as the Fantastic Four’s spaceship appears in their world.

This post-credits scene felt different from the rest of the movie because it was filmed by the directors of Avengers: Doomsday, Joe and Anthony Russo, using the same set. This sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday, potentially with the major conflict taking place during a looming incursion involving Earth-616. While the cosmic scale of this scene will likely be different from the more realistic feel of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it would give The Punisher a fitting final moment.

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Deserves A Send-Off Worthy Of The Comics

Jon Bernthal is a highly acclaimed actor, especially known for his portrayal of the Punisher. Fans praise how accurately he captures the character’s tough exterior and inner struggles. There’s a lot of anticipation for Spider-Man: Brand New Day because it will finally bring Bernthal’s version of the Punisher to the big screen, giving him a larger audience after his work in several popular projects.

Okay, so I’m a little worried. With Secret Wars coming up, there’s a chance they might recast some actors, and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher is one of them. Honestly, if that happens, that huge scene in Secret Wars where he wipes out a bunch of major villains would be the perfect way to give his version of the character a proper send-off. He’s always been great at taking out the smaller guys, but seeing him go toe-to-toe with all the remaining big bads and win? That would instantly make his Punisher legendary, and honestly, he deserves it.

Despite the likely end of the main MCU timeline in Avengers: Doomsday, many familiar actors are expected to reprise their roles when the universe is rebuilt in Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s still uncertain if Jon Bernthal will return as the Punisher, but the second season of Daredevil: Born Again and a planned Punisher one-shot special – similar in style to Werewolf by Night – could give us a better idea of his future in the MCU.

It’s doubtful the Punisher as we know him in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe will make it through a major incursion event. By the time Avengers: Secret Wars arrives, the focus will likely be on the main Avengers team. Even if Jon Bernthal continues to play the Punisher in some form, his version of the character deserves a powerful moment, especially if the events following Secret Wars bring back villains like Kingpin and Zemo – making his past actions against them meaningless in the new storyline.
