Do you remember the first time you saw a movie with an R rating? I do – it was A Clockwork Orange, and it was a pretty intense experience at that age! There’s something naturally appealing about movies you’re not supposed to see when you’re younger. But as you get older, the rating starts to mean something different. It signals that the movie won’t shy away from complex or mature themes and won’t necessarily provide a comfortable viewing experience.
Movies receive R-ratings for different reasons, and it’s not just limited to certain genres like crime or horror. Even comedies, romances, and dramas can earn an R-rating depending on their content. Since Netflix has a huge selection of movies, including many with R-ratings – some popular, others less known – we’ve put together a list of the best R-rated films currently available on the platform, covering a variety of genres.
‘Havoc’ (2025)

Netflix
Detective Walker, played by Tom Hardy, operates in a gray area of Los Angeles – he’s influenced by the city’s wealthy elite but still tries to do what’s right, even among corrupt police officers. The situation escalates when the son of powerful businessman and mayoral hopeful Lawrence Beaumont (Forest Whitaker) flees after a failed drug deal. Walker is assigned to track down the son, and soon finds himself caught in a dangerous conflict between violent gangs and crooked cops all vying for the stolen drug money.
Director Gareth Evans, known for the incredible action in The Raid Redemption, delivers another intense experience here. Fans can anticipate the same hard-hitting, stylish action, but this time with a compelling and realistic crime story. Tom Hardy is reliably excellent as a tough, silent character, and truly shines with the expertly choreographed fight scenes. This film is intensely violent and earns its R-rating.
‘Green Room’ (2015)

A24
Okay, so this movie follows this punk band – Pat, Sam, Reece, and Tiger – and they take what seems like an easy, well-paying gig at this secluded place. Turns out, the people hiring them are Neo-Nazis. As you can imagine, that doesn’t sit well with them, and they make a statement by ending their set with the Dead Kennedys’ “Nazi Punks F Off” – which, yeah, immediately makes things tense. But the real trouble starts when they accidentally see something they shouldn’t have. Their boss, Anthony, a seriously intimidating guy played by Patrick Stewart, decides they know too much and need to be stopped. It’s a total mess, and things quickly spiral out of control.
Green Room blends horror and crime thriller elements, but it’s primarily a relentlessly paced, intense film – much like the punk music that inspires it. At its heart, it’s a desperate struggle to survive, and director Jeremy Saulnier expertly crafts compelling, threatening characters, resulting in a truly captivating story.
‘Caught Stealing’ (2025)

Sony Pictures Releasing
Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a former high school baseball star now working as a bartender, gets unexpectedly caught up in a dangerous criminal situation. When he agrees to look after his neighbor Russ’s (Matt Smith) cat, Hank finds himself targeted by violent gangs who are actually looking for Russ. Set in 1990s New York City, a frantic chase begins, forcing Hank to rely on his wits and navigate a world of unusual characters to survive.
I absolutely loved ‘Caught Stealing’! Honestly, it feels like the perfect movie for Austin Butler to really shine – he’s just got so much charisma, and this is his best performance yet, in my opinion. Beyond that, it’s incredibly nostalgic, with a score and visuals that totally pull you into the time period. But what really makes it special is how it balances everything – the thrilling violence, the surprisingly sharp humor, and the real dramatic moments – it all comes together to create something you won’t forget.
‘Relay’ (2024)

Tom (Riz Ahmed) is a key player in New York City’s business world, working behind the scenes as a problem-solver. He uses a special communication system – initially created for the hearing impaired – to help people expose wrongdoing without revealing their identities. But when he meets Sarah Grant (Lily James), a whistleblower in dire need of help, he breaks his own rule of staying detached, and finds himself in a dangerous struggle against a powerful, surveillance-focused system.
Relay is a smart and suspenseful thriller that feels reminiscent of classic conspiracy films. The movie cleverly uses a real-world communication service to create a captivating chase through New York City. Riz Ahmed delivers a fantastic performance, the film looks great, and it skillfully blends big ideas about power with relatable human stories. Overall, Relay has a lot to offer.
‘Wind River’ (2017)

The Weinstein Company
Cory Lambert, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tracker played by Jeremy Renner, stumbles upon a disturbing discovery: the frozen body of an 18-year-old Native American woman on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. When FBI rookie agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) arrives to investigate, she seeks Cory’s expertise to understand the deep-rooted issues of neglect and bias that likely contributed to the tragedy.
Taylor Sheridan is quickly becoming a major force in television, thanks to hits like Yellowstone, Landman, and Mayor of Kingstown. But don’t overlook his films, especially the American Frontier trilogy, which offer equally compelling stories about American life. Wind River is a prime example – it’s a beautifully shot, atmospheric crime thriller with a well-written, character-focused plot. If you’re a fan of Sheridan’s work, this R-rated film is a perfect choice.
‘Triple Frontier’ (2019)

Netflix
Triple Frontier is one of Netflix’s strongest action movies and keeps viewers guessing. The story centers around five former military friends who decide to rob a drug lord’s heavily fortified house—a house rumored to be filled with cash.
Netflix’s Triple Frontier boasts a fantastic cast, including Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac – who gives a particularly strong performance – Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund. The movie also features intense and believable action, making it worth watching more than once.
‘Leave the World Behind’ (2023)

Netflix
Netflix’s film, Leave the World Behind, has divided audiences – some love its slow, unsettling pace, while others find it frustrating. The story centers on a family enjoying a vacation rental when strange events begin to disrupt their lives and cut them off from the outside world.
While “Leave the World Behind” leans more towards suspense than outright horror, its commentary on society is deeply disturbing. The film suggests that people will quickly betray each other during a crisis, even those they recently considered close friends or loved ones.
‘The Irishman’ (2019)

Netflix
While it might not quite reach the heights of Goodfellas, The Irishman clearly benefited from the same passion and care Martin Scorsese poured into that iconic film. It’s a sprawling story that follows the long and often brutal life of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), from his time serving in Italy during World War II, through a long career with the mob, and culminating in the puzzling disappearance of his friend Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The result is a truly epic movie.

Robert De Niro is predictably excellent as Frank, but he brings a surprising gentleness to the role, making it distinct from his performances in films like Goodfellas and Casino. With even stronger performances from Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, The Irishman is easily one of the best movies Netflix has ever produced.
‘The Killer’ (2023)

Netflix
David Fincher’s latest film, The Killer, features Michael Fassbender as a quiet, professional assassin. When a hit goes wrong and an innocent person is killed, he finds his life unraveling. This mistake creates serious problems, threatening the safety of the few people he holds dear.
Considered one of the best films of 2023, The Killer is a strong addition to Netflix’s original movies. Michael Fassbender delivers his signature powerful performance as the quiet protagonist, and the minimal dialogue makes every line he speaks impactful. David Fincher is known for his thrilling films, and The Killer continues that trend. It’s a darkly humorous, satirical, and action-filled ride.
‘Reptile’ (2023)

Netflix
Reptile follows a detective investigating the death of a real estate agent. While her ex-husband seems like the obvious suspect—they were still legally entangled—the detective suspects the current husband is concealing crucial information. What starts as a standard crime story quickly becomes a complex and ethically challenging case.
It’s best not to reveal the ending of Reptile – it’s a genuine surprise and features some clever casting choices. However, the film really belongs to Benicio del Toro, and while the writing isn’t always as strong as his performance, it’s good enough to support him for the most part.
