The Best Sci-Fi Game of 2025 Is Being Saved For the Very End of the Year

The sci-fi game expected to be the best of 2025 is releasing near the end of the year. We’ve already seen several excellent sci-fi games this year, including popular titles like Split Fiction, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, The Alters, Citizen Sleeper 2, and The Outer Worlds 2. Now, a well-known sci-fi series is returning in just over a month, and it’s poised to be the highest-rated game of the year based on its previous installments.

Nintendo is releasing Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on December 4th for both the Switch and the new Switch 2. This is the first major Metroid Prime game in almost 20 years, following Metroid Prime 3: Corruption from 2007. After such a long wait, fans have high expectations, and everything suggests it will be a fantastic game.

Metroid Prime Games Are Some of Nintendo’s Best

Besides The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario, Metroid is arguably Nintendo’s most critically acclaimed series. Starting with its debut on the GameCube in 2002, the franchise has consistently received high praise from both critics and fans, though this hasn’t always meant huge sales numbers. Overall, Metroid is probably the highest-rated science fiction series of all time, and many consider the Metroid Prime games to be the best the series has to offer.

As a huge fan, I still think the original Metroid Prime is the best GameCube game ever made – and the critics clearly agree! It has an incredible 97 out of 100 on Metacritic, which puts it among the most celebrated games of all time. The sequels are amazing too; Metroid Prime 2: Echoes scored a 92, and even Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which is considered the weakest of the three, still got a fantastic 90! It’s just a consistently incredible series.

With the previous Metroid Prime games consistently receiving excellent reviews, it’s likely Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be just as good. This is even more likely since Retro Studios, the original creators of the series, are developing this new installment. Metroid Prime 4 has the potential to be the highest-rated game of 2025, not just within the sci-fi category.

Nintendo Is Putting Quality Above All With Metroid Prime 4

The growing confidence that Metroid Prime 4 will be a fantastic game stems from how Nintendo has managed its development. Originally announced for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, the game wasn’t progressing as hoped. Nintendo made the bold decision to completely restart development from the beginning in early 2019, and they once again entrusted Retro Studios with leading the project.

Nintendo’s decision to start Metroid Prime 4 over completely shows how much they value the Metroid Prime series and their commitment to quality. While other companies might have tried to finish a flawed game, Nintendo was willing to lose a significant amount of money and essentially rebuild the entire project from scratch to ensure the final product was truly great.

This decision suggests Metroid Prime 4 could be something truly exceptional. From what Nintendo has shared, it appears they’ve put more attention and effort into MP4 than any other game in over ten years. If that level of care shows in the final product, Metroid Prime 4 could be a strong contender for Game of the Year, and not just the best sci-fi game of the year.
