It follows Dr. Dave Bowman, portrayed by Keir Dullea, and a team of astronauts sent to explore a strange object on the moon. Tension builds as the ship’s computer, HAL, starts acting unpredictably, creating conflict with the crew it’s supposed to protect. Maurice Lapf, writing for LIFE magazine, admitted that many viewers likely didn’t fully understand the meaning of the film’s mysterious scenes, but he noted that it inspired a renewed sense of awe about humanity and the universe. Joseph Gelmis of Newsday was equally impressed, calling the film a masterpiece after a second viewing and stating it far surpasses any other science fiction film ever made.
It’s easy to see why 2001: A Space Odyssey is considered a landmark science fiction film. It brilliantly captures the unsettling feeling that comes with imagining the vastness of deep space – a place so distant and alien that it’s hard for us to truly grasp. This film paved the way for the success of later hits like Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Interstellar.
