The Best Shark Movie of the Last Decade is Now on Prime Video

Look, when it comes to shark movies, nothing really beats Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. It’s a classic for a reason – the way it built tension, hinting at the shark rather than constantly showing it, and that incredible score… unforgettable. There have been a lot of animal attack movies since then, but few have come close to matching that level of thrill. However, I recently stumbled upon a survival horror flick from the 2010s that’s now streaming on Prime Video, and honestly, it’s easily one of the best shark movies I’ve seen since Jaws set the standard.

I just finished watching The Shallows, and it was a really gripping thriller! It’s from 2016, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, and stars Blake Lively as a medical student who gets stranded way out at sea after a shark attack while surfing in Mexico. Seriously, she’s stuck on this tiny rock with the tide coming in, and it’s all about her trying to survive using her smarts and determination. It became available on Prime Video on March 1st, and it’s actually pretty well-regarded – Rotten Tomatoes gives it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 79% and lists it as one of the best shark movies ever made – though Jaws still holds the top spot, naturally.

The Shallows Is One of the Best Shark Movies Since Jaws

Many consider The Shallows to be a fantastic shark movie, comparable to or even better than Jaws. What makes it so good is that, like Spielberg’s classic, it builds suspense through suggestion and restraint, rather than relying on flashy special effects. The film is a tightly focused survival thriller, centering on a single character stranded just a short distance from the beach. Like Jaws, the shark isn’t shown very often. Instead, The Shallows cleverly reveals glimpses of the shark circling and lurking below, creating intense anticipation and almost unbearable tension.

I was completely gripped by The Shallows – it’s a brilliantly suspenseful movie! Blake Lively is incredible; she really carries the whole film and makes everything feel so real. You genuinely feel her panic, her desperation, and her determination to survive. And even when we do see the shark, it doesn’t feel cheesy or fake. The special effects are fantastic – they made this shark look more realistic and menacing than any I’ve seen since Jaws came out in 1975. It really felt like a true threat.

What’s New on Prime Video?

Prime Video added several new movies and shows in March, including the thriller The Shallows, the classic horror film Carrie, and all of the Shrek movies. They’re continuing to add content in April, with popular titles like Dances with Wolves, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Titanic now available.
