Vampires are incredibly enduring figures in popular culture. They’ve been reimagined countless times, from the classic, powerful villain in Bram Stoker’s Dracula to the troubled teenagers in The Vampire Diaries, always reflecting the fears and concerns of each new generation. Beyond simple scares, writers often use vampires as a way to explore deeper issues. For example, Midnight Mass used the vampire myth to examine religious fanaticism and addiction, while What We Do in the Shadows presented a humorous, down-to-earth take on eternal life. Even with so many vampire stories already out there, there’s still room for fresh ideas. A particularly unique take on the mythology emerged four years ago, offering a punk-rock edge that deserved a wider audience.
Firebite is an Australian drama series with eight episodes that first aired on December 16, 2021, four years ago. Created by Warwick Thornton and Brendan Fletcher, this AMC+ original didn’t get much attention outside of Australia. The show is set in the fictional mining town of Opal City, based on Coober Pedy, and follows Tyson Walker (Rob Collins) and his adopted daughter Shanika (Shantae Barnes-Cowan) as they try to eliminate the last group of vampires. These vampires are hiding in the old opal mines under the desert. Unlike the vampires in shows like Twilight or Castlevania, the creatures in Firebite aren’t glamorous or heroic – they’re seen as dangerous pests and a long-standing problem that Tyson and Shanika are determined to destroy.
You Should Give Firebite a Chance

The horror in Firebite is deeply connected to Australia’s colonial past. The series reimagines vampires as not originating in Australia, but arriving with the British First Fleet in 1788. According to the show’s story, the first eleven vampires represent the eleven vials of smallpox brought to Sydney Cove, portraying the vampire outbreak as a deliberate biological attack on Indigenous Australians. This makes the typical vampire story about more than just hunting monsters – it’s about reclaiming land and history. Tyson and Shanika aren’t just fighting vampires; they’re battling the lasting effects of colonial violence that continues to harm their community.
Visually, Firebite is captivating, blending the stark, sun-drenched landscapes of Mad Max with the intensely confined horror of The Descent. The show’s setting, Opal City, offers a distinctive and challenging environment: the daytime sun is incredibly bright, driving characters underground into dark mines to hunt. This sharp contrast fuels a fast-paced, gritty, and realistic action style. Tyson is a charismatic and impulsive fighter, using both traditional weapons like boomerangs and modern firearms, while Shanika embodies a new generation grappling with the lasting effects of the Stolen Generations. The series is raw, powerful, and uncompromising in its message, refusing to shy away from difficult truths.
Firebite is currently available to stream for free on Plex TV.
