Wow, 2023 was incredible for movies! Even with the writers’ and actors’ strikes causing so many delays, we still got hit after hit in theaters – truly amazing blockbusters and award-winning films. And now, get this – one of the biggest movies of the entire year, the one that broke all sorts of records, is now streaming on Tubi for free! They’ve added a ton of great titles for December, but that one really stands out. I’m so excited to be able to watch it again and again!
After becoming a massive hit in theaters, Barbie – one half of the summer’s “Barbenheimer” sensation – is now available to stream on Tubi. Starring Margot Robbie, the film follows Barbie as she ventures from the idyllic Barbie Land into the real world. It quickly became one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide. This made it the highest-grossing movie of 2023, ranked among the top fourteen highest-grossing films ever, and set a record as the highest-grossing film directed by a woman. Barbie received critical acclaim, being named a top ten film of the year by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and was nominated for eight Academy Awards.
Barbie Was a Smash Hit, but Where Is the Sequel?
The movie Barbie was a huge success, both financially and critically. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning an 88% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and lived up to the hype. Barbie is a beautiful film that cleverly transformed a beloved toy into a touching story about womanhood.
Considering how incredibly popular and financially successful the Barbie movie was, it’s surprising we haven’t heard about a sequel yet. While the first movie tied up most storylines, making another one not essential, there are many possibilities. A follow-up could explore the stories of other dolls like Allan, Midge, or Weird Barbie, continue Ken’s character arc, or even tell the story of Barbie’s creator, Ruth Handler. Given how well the first movie did and how much people enjoyed it, a sequel would almost certainly be a hit.
Although a follow-up to the recent Barbie movie isn’t being planned right now, despite some early rumors, a new animated Barbie film is in development. Mattel Studios and Illumination have partnered to create this movie, which will be different from the first Barbie and will be released in theaters. Details about the story and when it will come out haven’t been announced yet.
What’s New on Tubi?
While Barbie is popular, it’s just one of many new movies now available on Tubi. December 1st brought a fantastic selection of titles to the platform, including all three films in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and the classic Forrest Gump. You can also stream Grease, The Menu, and The Silence of the Lambs for the first time on Tubi.
