If you were asked which sci-fi series is most popular in 2026, you might think of established favorites like Star Wars and Star Trek. Star Wars has a new film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu coming out soon, and Star Trek is doing very well with its comic books. While both are still popular, they aren’t currently the biggest franchise. That title goes to a series that’s still relatively new, and its next installment is arriving quickly.
Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl has become incredibly popular this year. Originally published on Royal Road in 2020, the series quickly gained a dedicated following and saw increased readership when it became available on Amazon. Penguin Random House picked up the series in 2024 through Ace Books, and its popularity has since skyrocketed. Currently spanning seven books, the eighth installment, A Parade of Horribles, is scheduled for release on May 12th.
Dungeon Crawler Carl Is Huge and Only Getting Bigger
If you’re new to Dungeon Crawler Carl, here’s a quick introduction. The story centers around Carl, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, and Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s cat. They’re among the few who survive the Earth’s destruction by the Borant Corporation, an alien mining company. Now, they’re forced to compete in a deadly, intergalactic game show called Dungeon Crawler World, alongside other survivors. It’s a high-stakes fight for survival full of unexpected twists and turns, inspired by role-playing games, as Carl struggles to stay alive and fight back against his captors.
As a huge fan of this series, I’m thrilled to see it’s really taking off! It started with the books, but now it’s going everywhere. They sold the rights for a TV show earlier this year, and just recently announced they’re making a live-action adaptation for Peacock – the original author, Dinniman, is even involved as a producer! And it doesn’t stop there. We’re getting a webcomic next year, a graphic novel of the first book on May 19th, and even another graphic novel expanding the story in 2027, called Dungeon Crawler Carl: Crocodile. Oh, and did I mention there are two video games in the works? It’s a fantastic time to be a fan!
What Do We Know About the Next Dungeon Crawler Carl Book?

Even as Dungeon Crawler Carl grows beyond its online presence, the story remains rooted in the books, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment. Here’s what we know so far: The next book, A Parade of Horribles, will find Carl and Donut on the tenth floor of the dungeon, facing what initially seem like surprisingly ordinary challenges. However, things will quickly become much more dangerous. This chapter promises to be particularly explosive, as the story’s AI becomes increasingly unstable and the aftermath of the Faction Wars causes widespread chaos and panic.
Things are about to get even more intense for Carl and Donut, and the rest of the Crawlers, in the upcoming book, A Parade of Horribles. But don’t worry, this isn’t where their story ends! The author, Dinniman, has shared that the Dungeon Crawler Carl series will eventually have ten books. Right now, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of A Parade of Horribles on May 12th.
