Fans have been waiting for 13 years, but a sequel to the most popular zombie movie ever is finally happening! While interest in zombie horror has cooled off since its peak in the late 2000s and 2010s – think shows like The Walking Dead – this news is a welcome sign that the genre still has potential, and this sequel is easily the most exciting development in a while.
Although World War Z came out in 2013, Paramount is just now, at CinemaCon 2026, announcing a new movie is being planned. They haven’t released any details yet about what kind of movie it will be—a sequel, a prequel, or something else entirely. It’s also unknown if Brad Pitt, director Marc Forster, or anyone else from the original film will be involved.
Why It Took So Long For A World War Z Sequel

The movie World War Z significantly differed from the Max Brooks novel it was based on. The book was structured as a collection of firsthand accounts – reports, diaries, and stories – detailing a fictional zombie apocalypse and offering a guide to survival. In contrast, the film starred Brad Pitt as a U.N. investigator traveling the world to uncover the cause of the outbreak. It transformed the zombie survival-horror genre into a large-scale blockbuster, blending mystery with classic horror and action sequences. The film was a major financial success, earning $540 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing zombie movie ever.
Despite its initial success, World War Z never received a sequel. The film faced major behind-the-scenes issues, including a year-long delay in its release after a lengthy production period from 2011 to 2012. The third act required significant rewriting by Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof, leading to costly reshoots. The original, large-scale climax planned by the initial writers, Matthew Michael Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, had to be scaled back due to budget concerns. Ultimately, Paramount spent an estimated $200 to $300 million on production, reshoots, and marketing. While the film grossed $540 million worldwide, the high costs diminished the financial victory. This is why a sequel never moved forward, even though directors J.A. Bayona and David Fincher were both involved with potential sequel projects in the years following the first film’s release.
We don’t yet know what the next movie will be about, or how big Paramount wants it to be. However, we’ll share any new information as soon as we get it.
There’s no confirmed release date yet for the upcoming World War Z movie. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on what you’d like to see in the film on the ComicBook Forum!
