The Boys Just Revealed That the Ultimate Goal Isn’t to Defeat Homelander

It’s unusual for a TV show to make its ultimate goal so clear so quickly, but The Boys does just that. In the first few episodes of the Prime Video series, Billy Butcher brings Hughie Campbell into the fold and explains his determination to get rid of all Supes, fueled by his frustration with their lack of responsibility. However, his hatred isn’t universal. He specifically reserves a strong animosity for Homelander, due to the leader of The Seven’s involvement in the vanishing of his wife, Becca. Almost every episode of The Boys focuses on how far Billy is willing to go to kill Homelander, and the Season 4 finale shows Karl Urban’s character fully unleash his frightening abilities.

Before Homelander and Billy Butcher resolve their conflict, the The Boys universe is expanding with a visit to Godolkin University in Gen V Season 2. The new season initially seems to follow a familiar pattern, as Starlight contacts Marie Moreau to learn more about Vought’s secretive Project Odessa. But it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Gen V’s storyline is more expansive than just Homelander, suggesting he isn’t the only one in control.

Cipher Finally Tells Marie Moreau What He Wants in Gen V Season 2

Since arriving at God U, the new dean, Cipher, has been a major source of frustration for the students. He was responsible for the experiments that Marie, Jordan Li, Emma Meyer, and Andre Anderson experienced at the Elmira Adult Rehabilitation Center. His intention was to maximize everyone’s abilities, but the process tragically resulted in Andre’s death – he attempted to escape by ripping a large door from its frame. Even after classes resume, Cipher continues to create conflict by making students fight, primarily to assess Marie’s potential. He’s convinced she could become the strongest Supe ever, but he won’t reveal his reasoning until she returns to Elmira to help Cate Dunlap in Gen V Season 2, Episode 5.

Now that Marie is back in a cell, Cipher explains that he doesn’t see her as simply a weapon. He believes her blood-bending powers could actually heal the world. Marie doesn’t grasp his meaning initially, but it becomes clear when she discovers her sister injured in a cell within the prison. Instead of falling apart, she immediately uses her abilities to close the wound and pull her sister back from the edge of death. Marie’s friends suffer watching her save her sister, but this likely won’t stop her, as she’s starting to realize that Cipher might not be as irrational as she thought.

Cipher Has His Eye on More Than Just Power

Unlike most people at Vought in The Boys, Cipher isn’t just aiming to maintain his position-he wants much more. Sister Sage, aware of his plans, pays him a visit and urges him to work faster, emphasizing the limited time they have. She assures him not to concern himself with Homelander’s reaction to Marie potentially becoming more powerful, because their objective is of utmost importance. It’s surprising to hear anyone dismiss the world’s strongest Supe, but it’s becoming clear that Homelander may be insignificant compared to what Cipher and Sister Sage are planning.

It seems unlikely that Homelander will survive The Boys Season 5. He’s made too many enemies who desperately want him defeated. But even if Homelander falls, it won’t mean the end of Vought or the dominance of Supes. It looks like Cipher is working to make sure that even if humans manage to defeat the current threat, an even more dangerous one will emerge to take its place. With Marie on the Supes’ side, both Supes and the humans who help Vought achieve its objectives don’t have to worry about the consequences.
