Godzilla has enjoyed a long and successful history in Japan, the United States, and around the globe. With another Japanese Godzilla film, a sequel to Godzilla Minus One, planned, the American MonsterVerse is also growing, with a new Godzilla x Kong movie scheduled for 2027. Surprisingly, a new comic book storyline from IDW, titled The Death of Godzilla, suggests a dramatic end for the iconic monster. The arc will also feature work from a well-known comic book artist.
Dan Jurgens, the artist known for drawing the iconic battle between Superman and Doomsday, will create a special cover for the sixth issue of IDW Publishing’s Godzilla comic. IDW describes the upcoming issue, releasing January 7, 2026, as a major turning point for the series, showing Godzilla’s defeat in a way fans haven’t witnessed before. The cover by Jurgens is designed as a tribute to one of the most memorable endings in comic book history.
I’ve been following the Godzilla comics, and even though the current ‘Lizard King’ form seems to be nearing its end, IDW is already suggesting a major comeback. They’re calling the next evolution ‘Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla,’ and it looks like this ‘death’ is actually a way for Godzilla to become even more powerful. Apparently, he’s going to transform into a being of pure cosmic energy – which is saying a lot, considering how strong he already is! It sounds like this could make him virtually unstoppable.
R.I.P. Godzilla

IDW editor Jake Williams shared his thoughts on a major comic book event launching January 7th, 2026, saying, “Comics need to be exciting, and I can’t imagine a more shocking way to conclude the first story arc of the ongoing Godzilla series – the first in over ten years – than by killing Godzilla! If you’ve been considering checking out the series, now’s the perfect time.” The series has been a thrilling ride so far, penned by Tim Seeley – known for creating titles like Hack/Slash, Revival, and Local Man – and brought to life visually by artist Hendry Prasetya.
Even though IDW is developing its own Godzilla stories, the monster is currently causing chaos in the Marvel Universe through a big crossover event. After defeating the Hulk in a direct battle, Marvel’s heroes have teamed up and built a giant, incredible mech suit to try and stop Godzilla. Having already destroyed a Celestial being, it remains to be seen if anything can defeat the kaiju in the final issue of Godzilla Destroys The Marvel Universe.
