Considering the third Downton Abbey film, titled ‘The Grand Finale,’ strongly implies there won’t be a fourth, Michelle Dockery has discussed some alternative endings that were explored during the filmmaking process.

We considered a couple of different endings. One idea showed Mary returning to work at the library, but we ultimately chose the scene honoring Maggie, which I believe was the stronger choice. It always felt like the right way to conclude the story. The final scene of Mary, Cora, and Robert saying goodbye was meant to give the audience a sense of closure and moving forward. Although it appears Mary is alone, she actually has the staff and family around her, suggesting a hopeful future. I also appreciated that Mary ended up independent, ready to embrace a new chapter, be happy, and take charge of the estate. While it’s the end of the story, it also feels like a continuation of life.

I believe that final shot at Highclere Castle marked the end of filming. It was just me and the director, Simon Curtis, since there were no other actors involved. The scene depicts Mary’s memories, so Simon guided me through the specific moments they wanted to find within 15 years of footage. The dance between Mary and Matthew around the gramophone was the most obvious one. I knew what to expect when we filmed those moments, including shots of Maggie and Sybil. They played the music through speakers, which really helped me connect with the scene emotionally. Actually, the biggest challenge for me was holding back tears while playing Michelle, because Mary is a very composed character who doesn’t easily show her emotions. It was tough to maintain that stoicism in the final moment.
