Fans have been eagerly awaiting the last season of Stranger Things for a long time, and it’s going to be a huge event! Netflix has confirmed the final episode will be shown in movie theaters, and it sounds like it’s going to be a very emotional experience. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, have warned viewers to have tissues handy, and that’s got everyone worried about what’s going to happen.
When I found out Season 5 would be the end of Stranger Things, I immediately wanted to know how the story finished. But the wait took years because making the season was difficult, especially with things like the strikes. Now that the final episodes are almost here, I was already expecting to be emotional. However, the creators recently said we should be prepared to cry, and that’s actually making me even more anxious!
The Duffer Brothers Posted About The Emotional Stranger Things Finale Being Released In Theaters
Similar to how New Year’s Eve celebrates the end of a year, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things marks the end of a fantastic run for the show on Netflix. To make this 2025 release extra special, Netflix is giving it a huge series finale event. The two-hour episode will be shown in theaters on both December 31st and January 1st. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, shared their excitement on Instagram, but something they mentioned in their post has also caught my attention and given me pause.

Ross Duffer hinted the series finale will be a tearjerker, and honestly, I’m bracing myself! Seeing the young cast – Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Max – grow up has been so emotional for viewers. Even their goodbye messages about filming ending were touching. But Duffer’s recent post has me really worried about what heartbreaking plot twists are coming.
My Theories About Why The Stranger Things Finale Will Leave Me In Tears
I was already bracing myself for an emotional finale, knowing we’d have to say goodbye to some beloved characters. But after the creators, the Duffer Brothers, warned that the ending will likely make people cry, I’ve been trying to guess what shocking events might unfold.
I have a theory stemming from a photo Ross Duffer shared of Max’s drawing for Lucas—the one showing them on a date. Considering her courageous sacrifice to defeat Vecna resulted in broken bones and severe injuries, leaving her in a coma, I’m starting to think her story might become even more heartbreaking.
I’m concerned that comments from the show’s creators about Max and Lucas in Season 5 suggest their relationship might not have a happy ending. We only know that Max will be in a very emotional scene involving her running, and I’m worried that either she or Lucas might make a huge sacrifice for the other. A recent, sad photo posted by one of the creators seems to confirm that their story will be incredibly heartbreaking.
I’ve long believed the ending of Stranger Things will center around Will Byers. Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, hinted that the story will come full circle with his character, since it began with him disappearing in Season 1. Will has been deeply affected by the Upside Down ever since, and I think he’ll ultimately make a huge sacrifice – possibly even defeating Vecna – to save his friends, particularly Mike.
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I’ve been trying to guess what the Duffer Brothers have planned for the final season, especially why they think it’ll be so emotional. But then I remembered David Harbour, who plays Hopper, talking about the ending being ‘satisfying’ rather than simply ‘happy’ or ‘sad’. That really stuck with me. I get the feeling that even with all the inevitable heartbreak Hawkins is likely to face, the finale will wrap things up in a way that feels complete and will make letting go a little bit easier. It won’t necessarily be a cheerful ending, but one that provides a sense of closure, and honestly, that’s what I’m hoping for most.
However, that doesn’t mean saying goodbye won’t come with a few tears.
Get ready to cry! The first four episodes of Stranger Things season 5 will stream on Netflix starting November 26th. Plus, you can see the very last episode on the big screen in theaters on New Year’s Eve, so be sure to check local showtimes.
