The Expanse’s Perfect Replacement Is Already Happening at Prime Video (& a New 2026 Sci-Fi Release Will Help)

Viewers who loved The Expanse followed the adventures of Jim Holden, Naomi Nagata, Amos Burton, and their crew aboard the Rocinante as they uncovered huge conspiracies reaching across the solar system and explored the secrets of the protomolecule. However, the show ended after only six seasons, leaving out about a third of the original story. Although comics have expanded the world, no other science fiction series has yet come along to offer a similar experience.

Fans of The Expanse have reason to be excited! Amazon MGM Studios, which successfully brought The Expanse back after it was cancelled, has announced it will adapt James S.A. Corey’s new book trilogy, The Captive’s War. While the story will be different, the same creative team behind The Expanse is involved. And good news for book lovers – the next book in The Captive’s War series will be released this April!

How The Captive’s War Is Building the Next Iconic Sci-Fi Universe

I was so excited when James S.A. Corey – actually Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck – released The Mercy of Gods in August 2024, kicking off The Captive’s War series! It hit the New York Times bestseller list right away, and it’s a fantastic shift for the series. It really goes all-in on space opera with the introduction of the Carryx – a huge interstellar empire with a really strict, biologically-based class system and a truly ruthless philosophy. They’re sweeping through everything humanity has built. Our best hope lies with people like Dafyd Alkhor, a research assistant who’s been captured. He has to figure out how to work within the Carryx’s system and try to start a rebellion from the inside, and I’m completely hooked on his story.

The upcoming Prime Video series has officially been given the go-ahead, stemming from a deal with the authors’ new media company, Expanding Universe. It brings back the creative team behind The Expanse – showrunner Naren Shankar, director Breck Eisner, and the original authors as executive producers – promising the same high quality fans loved. Many consider it the best follow-up to The Expanse so far, and viewers are very excited.

We don’t know when the series will premiere yet, but the upcoming release of the next book, The Faith of Beasts on April 14, 2026, is generating a lot of excitement. This new installment promises to expand on the powerful Carryx Empire and increase the challenges for the main characters. If you’re a sci-fi fan looking for a new show after The Expanse, this Prime Video adaptation of The Captive’s War looks like it could be your next favorite.
