Bruce Willis and Jason Statham’s memorable acting were key to making The Expendables a huge hit in theaters and launching a successful movie series. Now, those same performances are attracting viewers on Pluto TV, where the film is currently available to stream for free.
The original Expendables movie from 2010, which started the whole Expendables series, is currently a top 10 hit on Pluto TV. The film gained popularity by bringing together a cast of action stars who were famous in the 80s and 90s, including Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren.
Jason Statham’s performance as ex-SAS operative Lee Christmas and Bruce Willis’s enigmatic Mr. Church were highlights of the movie The Expendables. The film was a box office success, grossing $274 million and spawning three sequels. Together, the Expendables films have earned more than $855 million around the world.
Bruce Willis initially reprised his role as Mr. Church in The Expendables 2, but later left the series. Jason Statham played Lee Christmas in all four Expendables films. Currently, the first three Expendables movies are available to stream on Pluto TV at no cost.
The Expendables Franchise May Be Over
The original Expendables film did very well in theaters. While critics pointed out the story wasn’t very complex, audiences loved the over-the-top action and the fun, playful dialogue.
I loved seeing how well The Expendables 2 did – it really blew up at the box office, bringing in around $300 million worldwide! The Expendables 3 didn’t quite reach those heights, earning about $217 million, but it was still a solid success, in my opinion.
The fourth Expendables movie, released in 2023, was a disappointment. It received poor reviews and performed badly in theaters, earning only $51 million despite costing $100 million to make. It appeared audiences had lost interest in the series.
I skipped reading the reviews because I had a feeling they wouldn’t be positive. The project was troubled from the start, and it seemed to stem from a weak script. Since I wasn’t one of the main actors, it’s hard for me to comment on everything, but I know Sylvester Stallone wasn’t as involved as he usually is – he just had a role, rather than overseeing things. When Stallone is in charge, the quality is generally very consistent, but without his leadership, I think the script was the main issue. To make things worse, the director was replaced about a month before filming began.
The Expendables series showed signs of trouble even before its fourth movie wasn’t successful. There was talk of a television show based on the films, but it never materialized. As of 2022, producers were still trying to get the show made. A fifth movie was also planned, with filming initially scheduled for 2015, but it was ultimately cancelled and confirmed as shelved in 2022.
Following the disappointing box office performance of The Expend4bles, it’s easy to appreciate the original film’s enduring appeal. Looking back, it’s also touching to remember it as one of Bruce Willis’ final roles, considering his recent health challenges.
You can now watch all four Expendables movies – The Expendables, The Expendables 2, The Expendables 3, and The Expend4bles – for free on Pluto TV. They’re also available on Peacock.
