The Justice League of America was initially formed with DC Comics’ strongest heroes, but Justice League Dark was created as a separate team focusing on magic and the supernatural. First appearing in Justice League Dark #1 (2011) as part of DC’s New 52 relaunch – written by Peter Milligan with art by Mikel Janin – the team came together after Madame Xanadu foresaw the Enchantress endangering other heroes. Its original members – Shade the Changing Man, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Zatanna, and John Constantine – were a unique combination of characters from DC’s Vertigo line and established DC magic users, never before united in a team. Justice League Dark quickly gained popularity and became one of DC’s most beloved groups.
Justice League Dark is a team of supernatural heroes, including a ghost who possesses people, a shapeshifter created by the government, and an alien with the power to change reality. This rundown ranks the first ten members by their power level, beginning with the original team and ending with the member who joined during the ‘Rise of the Vampires’ story arc.
10) Deadman (Boston Brand)

DC Comics brought back the character Deadman in 2011 with the launch of The New 52, making him an original member of the Justice League Dark team in Justice League Dark #1. His backstory remains similar to the original: Boston Brand was a trapeze artist who was murdered, and then given a new purpose by the goddess Rama Kushna. Deadman is a ghost who can’t be seen or touched, and he can fly. His main ability is possessing other people, allowing him to use their bodies and access their memories. However, because he’s a ghost, he can’t directly attack anyone, and his power is limited by how strong-willed the person he’s possessing is – a strong person can force him out. This makes him the weakest member of the initial Justice League Dark lineup.
9) Madame Xanadu (Nimue Inwudu)

As a huge fan of Justice League Dark, I’ve always been fascinated by Madame Xanadu. She’s the one who really started the team back in the New 52 comics – she’s the founder and the person who brought everyone together. It was actually her foresight – she saw the Enchantress would take down the main Justice League – that kicked things off. She’s incredibly powerful, an immortal sorceress with roots in Arthurian legends and trained by Merlin himself! She uses tarot cards to see the future, can teleport, create magical shields, levitate, and basically has centuries of occult knowledge. While she’s not about brute force, she’s the brains of the operation, the strategist. Her ability to see what might happen was what brought the team together, although other members ultimately proved to be more powerful overall.
8) Frankenstein (the Agent of SHADE)

Frankenstein first assisted the Justice League Dark team in 2013’s Justice League Dark Annual #1 and later became an official member with issue #14 of Justice League Dark. The character originated in Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnke’s Seven Soldiers and his own series, Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE. Essentially immortal, Frankenstein possesses superhuman strength, doesn’t require food or sleep, and can even replace damaged limbs. He serves as the team’s primary close-combat fighter and is powerful enough to battle even the most formidable opponents, as demonstrated in a fight against Faust’s monster, Necro.
7) Black Orchid (Alba Garcia)

Alba Garcia first appears as the new Black Orchid in issue #9 of Justice League Dark (2012), a story arc where Jeff Lemire became the writer and revamped the team under an ARGUS directive. Steve Trevor sent her to the team as an ARGUS agent to monitor Constantine, and she joined just as the team encountered and saved Doctor Mist. Previously an army private who lost both arms, she was reconstructed as a shapeshifter connected to both the Green (the source of plant life, like Swamp Thing) and the Red (the source of animal life, like Animal Man). Her powers include changing her shape, increased strength, short-distance flight, and the ability to stretch and manipulate her limbs.
6) Andrew Bennett (I, Vampire)

Andrew Bennett, a centuries-old vampire featured in Joshua Hale Fialkov’s I, Vampire series, joined the Justice League Dark during the “Rise of the Vampires” storyline (issues #7-8 of both Justice League Dark and I, Vampire, released in 2012) at Constantine’s request. He was the tenth member to join the team. Bennett possesses typical, powerful vampire abilities – super strength, immortality, rapid healing, hypnosis, and the power to transform into mist, a bat, or a wolf. He can also turn others into vampires and, in the New 52 continuity, influence and alter human memories. After the “Rise of the Vampires” event, he came back from the dead with added magical skills, including resurrection, the ability to freeze opponents, and absorbing dark magic. He initially left the team in Justice League Dark #14, but later returned as a frequent member.
5) John Constantine

John Constantine started as a character in DC’s Vertigo line before becoming part of the main DC universe. He even helped found the Justice League Dark. He only agreed to join when two teammates, Xanadu and Shade, convinced him that a powerful sorceress called the Enchantress posed a threat too big to ignore, even for someone as self-focused as him. While Constantine is incredibly skilled in magic, he prefers using trickery, manipulation, and strategic sacrifices over direct fights. But when he does fight, he’s immensely powerful. He can summon hellfire, unleash electrical attacks, transform objects, and create magical seals he claims can even kill a god. He also has a vast knowledge of demons, fairies, and all things occult. He was key to stopping the Enchantress, successfully binding her to June Moone and saving the world.
4) Doctor Mist (Nommo Balewa)

Doctor Mist first appeared in Justice League Dark when the story involving ARGUS began, serving as their expert on the supernatural. Nommo Balewa is an ancient African wizard-king, over 10,000 years old, and his link to the magical Flame of Life makes him far more powerful than typical human magicians. He possesses a wide range of abilities, including immortality, creating illusions, altering reality, summoning, telekinesis, telepathy, projecting energy, absorbing magic, casting powerful blasts, creating force fields, and healing. He’s capable of magic that far surpasses what Constantine can achieve. However, his time with the team ended after it was discovered he was secretly working with Felix Faust, who offered to bring Mist’s late wife back to life. He departed in Justice League Dark #11 (2012).
3) Zatanna

Zatanna Zatara is an original member of the Justice League Dark, recruited by Madame Xanadu to battle the Enchantress. Her magic, which involves speaking backwards, is incredibly versatile within the DC Universe. For a long time, this meant she’d lose her abilities if she couldn’t speak, like if she was gagged. However, she’s overcome this limitation and can now perform magic using sign language. Zatanna has demonstrated amazing power, including performing a complex ritual to permanently restore Alec Holland to his human form after he became Swamp Thing, trapping the Nightmare Nurse with magical blasts, and eliminating hordes of Time Gremlins while also repairing tears in the fabric of time.
2) Enchantress (June Moone)

Enchantress is a remarkably powerful figure, originally a key member of both the initial Suicide Squad and the Justice League Dark. The story began with her as the primary villain, with Madame Xanadu witnessing her defeat the Justice League, which led to the creation of a new team to stop her. When fully unleashed, Enchantress possesses the strength to defeat even Superman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg. She can manipulate emotions to enrage the entire world, control the weather on a global scale, unleash mystical attacks, and even alter matter at a molecular level. Ultimately, she joined the team after Constantine managed to bind the Enchantress’s power back to her human host, June Moone.
1) Shade, the Changing Man (Rac Shade)

Rac Shade is one of the original members of Justice League Dark and is considered its most powerful supernatural hero. Interestingly, the writer of the Justice League Dark comic, Peter Milligan, previously wrote the Vertigo series Shade, the Changing Man and brought the character into the main DC universe as part of the New 52 initiative. Shade’s abilities come from a unique device called the M-Vest, which can alter reality – it’s not magic, and it operates by different rules than the spells used by the rest of the team. As an alien from the planet Meta, Shade’s powers are only limited when he’s experiencing strong emotions, which can cause the M-Vest to act erratically. This makes him not only the most powerful member of Justice League Dark, but also potentially the most dangerous.
