As a sci-fi fanatic, I’m thrilled to report that one of the most brilliant and surprisingly overlooked films of the genre has just popped up on a streaming service. You always *think* your favorite sci-fi flick is a hidden gem, but trust me on this one – *District 9* truly is. Released in 2009, it was a massive hit, and critics and audiences alike were blown away by its ambitious story, incredible special effects, and surprisingly human characters. But somewhere along the line, with a couple of less successful films from its director, Neill Blomkamp, it faded from the sci-fi conversation. We rightly celebrate films like *Blade Runner 2049*, *The Martian*, *Inception*, *Mad Max: Fury Road*, and *Dune* as the pinnacles of modern sci-fi, but *District 9* absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath. If you haven’t seen it, or it’s been a while, now is the perfect time to rediscover this masterpiece.
You can now watch *District 9* on Paramount+. This 2009 film became a hit thanks to its unique documentary-style approach to a science fiction story. Directed by Neill Blomkamp and co-written with Terri Tatchell, it stars Sharlto Copley as Wikus van de Merwe, an employee of a company managing an alien population housed in a large camp called District 9 in South Africa. Here’s what the movie is about:
Thirty years ago, aliens didn’t come to Earth to invade or help, but because their own planet was failing. They ended up isolated in a district within South Africa called District 9, and are overseen by a corporation called Multi-National United. This company cares more about exploiting the aliens’ technology than about their well-being. When a field agent (Sharlto Copley) catches a strange virus that changes his DNA, he’s forced to go into hiding – and the only place he can find refuge is District 9.
As a sci-fi fan, I have to say *District 9* is something special. It’s not just the way it *feels* like a documentary that sets it apart, but the visual effects are genuinely incredible. Honestly, it blows my mind that Neil Blomkamp isn’t hailed as one of the top sci-fi directors working today – his effects work is way better than a lot of those big-budget Hollywood flicks, and he does it on what seems like a shoestring budget!
‘District 9’ Is a Modern Classic
Sony Pictures Releasing
When it came out in 2009, *District 9* was a major success. It’s highly rated by critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences alike (82%). Fans often call it a hidden gem and a sci-fi classic, even a masterpiece. The film received four Academy Award nominations in 2010, including Best Picture, Editing, and Visual Effects. Financially, it performed very well, earning over $210 million despite only costing $30 million to make.
Why isn’t *District 9* remembered as a classic? It largely comes down to the films director Neill Blomkamp made afterward. While *Elysium*, starring Matt Damon, did okay at the box office, his 2015 film *Chappie* received mixed reviews and didn’t perform well commercially. Since then, Blomkamp has focused more on short films than feature-length movies. Although he recently directed *Gran Turismo* in 2023, it was only a moderate success.
