The Kessler Twins have left this world together.
As a lifestyle expert, I was saddened to learn about the passing of Alice and Ellen Kessler, identical twin sisters who were well-known performers in Germany. They recently passed away at their home in Gruenwald on November 17th, choosing to end their lives together with assisted suicide, as reported by the German Society for Humane Dying.
The group, which supports the right to choose when to end one’s life, said in a statement to NBC News that the couple had been discussing this possibility for a while. They had both been members of the organization for over a year.
The organization stated that anyone choosing this option in Germany needs to be fully aware of the implications and act responsibly. The sisters involved carefully considered their decision, consulting with both a lawyer and a doctor beforehand.
The DGHS emphasized that the decision needs to be well-considered and consistent, meaning it shouldn’t be made hastily but after careful thought over time.
In Germany, it’s legal for people to end their lives with assistance, following a 2020 court ruling that affirmed the right to seek help with this process under specific conditions.
Alice and Ellen became well-known in 1959 when they competed for Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest. They initially gained popularity performing in Italy and later appeared on American television for the first time in 1963.
Last year, the pair—who have never married—expressed their joint wish to die together.
In a 2024 interview with the German newspaper Corriere della Sera, the pair expressed their wish to pass away on the same day, admitting the thought of one going before the other is deeply upsetting.

According to DGHS spokesperson Wega Wetzel, she doesn’t know the exact reasons Alice and Ellen chose assisted suicide, but she believes their main motivation was wanting to die together on a particular day.
The representative explained that the individual’s wish to end their life was carefully considered over a long period and wasn’t the result of a sudden mental health crisis.
