The film KPop Demon Hunters has been a huge success this year, and fans are excited about the upcoming sequel. The movie was a big win for both Netflix and Sony, who are now searching for their next major franchise. Their latest project could be it – and if it follows the path of the source material it’s based on, it has the potential to be another blockbuster.
Sony Pictures is developing a movie based on Labubus, the popular and collectible Chinese brand. These adorable figures have gained significant traction recently, and Sony hopes to turn that popularity into a major film franchise, according to Variety.

Currently, very little is known about the movie. We don’t have any information about who will direct, produce, or star in it, nor do we know when it might be released. It’s also uncertain whether it will be a live-action film, an animated one, or a mix of both.
Labubus designs are naturally well-suited for animation, and Sony has a strong history of successful animated projects, including KPop Demon Hunters. Another possibility is a hybrid approach like Detective Pikachu, combining CGI and live-action. Only time will tell what Sony decides to do.
Labubu are cute characters originally created by artist Kasing Lung. He first introduced them in 2015 through a series of books called ‘The Monsters’, where they appeared as a group called the Labubus.
Characters from the series first appeared in a toy line released alongside the books. Then, in 2019, Lung collaborated with Pop Mart to create a new series of collectible figures called ‘Monsters,’ which quickly became popular with fans and collectors. Musicians like Lisa from Blackpink and Dua Lipa also started collecting them. The figures’ popularity grew as collectors enjoyed the surprise element of the blind box packaging, hoping to find their favorite designs.
It remains to be seen if the movie will be a hit in theaters, but if it’s even remotely as popular as the toys that inspired it, Sony could be on its way to building a new, successful film series.
