The Last of Us Online Was ‘the Best Multiplayer Game’ Devs Ever Played

If you were disappointed to hear The Last of Us Multiplayer was cancelled, this news might be tough to take: many developers at Naughty Dog thought it was the best multiplayer game they’d ever worked on.

Vinit Agarwal, the game director for the project, has been talking about this more recently. In a social media post, he expressed his disappointment over the cancellation of The Last of Us’ multiplayer game, promising that his work won’t be abandoned again.

Agarwal says he still hears from many ex-Naughty Dog employees who rave about how promising and fun the canceled TLOU Online multiplayer game was – they consider it the best multiplayer experience they’ve ever been a part of.

Sony didn’t reveal much about the project, but it was widely believed to be a continuation of the multiplayer idea from the original game. Players would likely compete in challenging online matches, scavenging for resources to bring back to their base.

The former game director has recently been discussing the cancelled game, stating it was nearly finished – around 80% complete – after seven years of work. The project received funding during the pandemic, but the developer then faced a difficult decision: should they prioritize development of The Last of Us Multiplayer, or shift their focus to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet?

It’s well documented at this point that Naughty Dog chose the latter.

Since launching its games, Sony has released several multiplayer titles, including Concord, Helldivers 2, and Marathon, with mixed results. Among dedicated PlayStation fans, the online component of The Last of Us proved to be the most popular.
