Fans finally have an update on season three of The Last of Us, following a recent creative shift for the show. The first season, which premiered in January 2023, was a huge success for HBO, becoming their most-watched show and generating a lot of buzz. While season two received some criticism, it was also well-received, making another season almost certain. However, news about the upcoming third season has been limited until now.

Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in The Last of Us, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s seen scripts for season 3. She jokingly admitted she hasn’t read them yet, but confirmed the scripts do exist, suggesting news about the upcoming season could be coming soon. This update arrives months after the show’s creator, Neill Druckmann, stepped back to concentrate on video game development, with a planned return in July 2025.

What Can We Expect From The Last of Us Season 3?

When Neill Druckmann left The Last of Us in July, Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Hangover Part II) took over as the only showrunner, handling writing and directing duties. Both the cast and crew, and now Ramsey, have stated that Druckmann’s exit won’t affect the show, emphasizing he left things in a strong position and will remain involved in the series. Considering season 3 is planned to be quite different in tone, this might have been a natural time for Druckmann to step back.

The ending of The Last of Us season 2 hinted that season 3 will focus on Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her experiences in Seattle. This storyline mirrors a section of the video game The Last of Us Part II, where players control Abby to see events from her point of view. Since Abby killed Joel (Pedro Pascal) earlier in the series, dedicating a season to her story will significantly change the show’s perspective and feel.

According to Craig Mazin, the third season of The Last of Us is planned to be longer and more expansive than the previous seasons. It’s unclear if it will cover the rest of the story from The Last of Us Part II that wasn’t included in season 2. Mazin has hinted at a possible fourth season, though it hasn’t been officially announced. While season 2 faced some criticism, the show has the potential to regain viewers’ confidence with a renewed focus and new creative ideas, even without Neil Druckmann’s direct involvement.
