The Last of Us Star Responds to Season 3’s Big Change

The popular HBO show “The Last of Us” is undergoing a significant change behind the scenes before Season 3. Right after the Season 2 finale in May, there was a creative reshuffling as both Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross announced their departures. These two individuals have been instrumental in Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us Part II,” which will continue to be the basis for “The Last of Us” Season 3 as the storyline shifts to focus on Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby. Despite fan concerns about the series’ future due to these unexpected departures, actress Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, Ellie’s girlfriend, has shown faith in the process.

In a recent chat with TVLine, Merced shared that Halley played a significant role in shaping Dina’s character, which made the relationship between Dina and Ellie so captivating. He was eager to collaborate further with them, but acknowledged their individual commitments. He admitted he isn’t privy to all details, but trusts the team’s decisions, knowing that they prioritize the project above all else.

On July 2, 2025, Druckmann and Gross announced their departures from the show in separate statements. Gross was a writer for The Last of Us series, while Druckmann took on roles as writer, showrunner, and co-director alongside Craig Mazin. Both are leaving, having also co-written The Last of Us Part II, with Druckmann serving as director for the video game as well.

In the third season of HBO’s series, there will be further development based on the second video game, with a stronger emphasis on Abby and her reasons for killing Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel. This creative decision, which was met with varied responses in the game, may raise concerns about the show maintaining its authenticity. Since Druckmann and Gross departed, taking away significant ties to the source material, any deviations from the game could face more intense criticism, especially since this season is already tackling one of the most contentious aspects of the game. However, Merced remains optimistic about Mazin steering the show independently.

Moving on, I intend to maintain contact with them. In fact, I will make sure to stay connected with them, so if I have any questions or issues as an enthusiast of the game, I would certainly address them, she stated. I’m not directly involved in the management side of things, which is a bit frustrating given my control-freak nature, but I trust Craig.

You can currently stream seasons 1 and 2 of the series titled “The Last of Us” on HBO Max. However, it’s predicted that season 3 won’t air until the year 2027.
