The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Canceled After 10 Years

Stephen Colbert won’t be staying up late for much longer.

After a decade as the host, the comedian disclosed that the well-established late-night program, which originally started with David Letterman in 1993 and continued for 33 years, is coming to an end.

Colbert informed his viewers on Instagram, July 17th, that our program isn’t simply concluding, but it marks the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. I’m not being replaced by someone else; instead, everything is simply ceasing to exist.

Expressing disappointment upon hearing that the series was being discontinued just a day prior, the 61-year-old took the time to express gratitude towards his dedicated viewers and team members.

As your trusted lifestyle guide, allow me to express my heartfelt gratitude towards you, my esteemed audience, for gracing us with your presence. I am truly blessed to stand alongside this exceptional band and talented artists each night on stage. Moreover, I can’t help but feel an extraordinary sense of deep gratitude toward the 200 dedicated individuals who make our show possible day in and day out. We have the unique opportunity to create magic together behind the scenes, and for the past decade, it has been my privilege and responsibility to share this daily endeavor with you through this camera lens. Thank you for being a part of our journey!

With his characteristic humor, Colbert subtly hinted at the show’s conclusion in May 2026, expressing enthusiasm about continuing the journey with his regular team for another ten months. It promises to be an enjoyable ride.

Why did the network choose to discontinue a talk show that had received an Outstanding Talk Series Emmy nomination the day prior? The executives at CBS, specifically George Cheeks, Amy Reisenbach, and David Stapf, offered candid explanations.

In a joint statement, the trio clarified that their decision was strictly based on financial considerations amidst difficult circumstances late at night. It has no connection whatsoever with the show’s success, its content, or any ongoing events at Paramount.

The executives went on to share their appreciation for Colbert and the show’s success.

We found it extremely challenging to make this decision due to our deep admiration, affection, and respect for Stephen Colbert and his remarkable team. However, as we move forward with a sense of gratitude, we are excited to pay tribute to Stephen and the show in the coming 10 months, sharing this special moment with millions of fans and viewers alike.
