When Chadwick Boseman first portrayed Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Captain America: Civil War”, it was evident that his casting was spot-on, rivaling Robert Downey Jr.’s. He went on to star in a standalone “Black Panther” film and appeared in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. However, tragically, Boseman lost his personal battle with cancer in 2020. Following this loss, the cast and audience were given time to grieve, resulting in a delay for the sequel to “Black Panther”, titled “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. Now, five years after Boseman’s death, there are rumors from Jeff Sneider’s “Hot Mic Podcast” that Marvel Studios may be planning for Black Panther’s future.
In his weekly podcast, Jeff Sneider hinted at the ongoing casting process for both T’Challa and the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Marvel Studios is currently focusing on finding actors for the upcoming X-Men film, Sneider suggests they may already have their pick for T’Challa. He mentioned that he has heard rumors about potential candidates being considered, with Damson Idris and David Jonsson as possible choices for the role of T’Challa.
In “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the film paid tribute to Boseman’s depiction of T’Challa by passing the Black Panther’s mantle to his younger sister Shuri, who was played by Letitia Wright. The audience also discovers that T’Challa and Nakia, portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o, secretly had a son named Toussaint, later identified as Prince T’Challa in Wakanda. There have been speculations that the next Black Panther could see Prince T’Challa grow up to assume the mantle from Shuri. However, these assumptions are yet to be confirmed. Earlier, Damson Idris was extensively linked with the role. But it seems Marvel Studios is considering another potential actor: David Jonsson for the part.
Jonsson’s career has been soaring lately, with his recent appearances in hit shows like “Industry” and movies such as “Alien: Romulus” and “The Long Walk,” an adaptation of a Stephen King novel. If he secures the role of T’Challa, it would be the most significant part he’s been offered so far. This move aligns with Marvel Studios’ strategy of tapping into rising talent for their heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although there’s no official start date yet for “Black Panther 3,” the studio has emphasized that the movie is a high priority, and writer-director Ryan Coogler has already discussed potential appearances by Denzel Washington in the film.
It’s worth mentioning that Ryan Coogler has expressed his current focus is on a reboot of The X-Files, which means Black Panther 3 may not be his immediate priority. For the time being, fans can catch up on Johannesburg’s work to prepare for any potential truth in the rumors. The series ‘Industry’ can be streamed exclusively on HBO Max, and ‘Alien: Romulus’ is available now on Disney+ and Hulu. If you’re keen to see Johannesburg on the big screen, mark your calendars for September 12th, when The Long Walk hits theaters.
