The Least Popular Pokemon from Every Generation, Ranked by Fans

Everyone has a favorite Pokémon, whether it’s a classic like Psyduck or a newer one like Trubbish. A recent fan website decided to see if they could prove that every Pokémon has at least one fan. The results showed that, surprisingly, every Pokémon received at least one vote as someone’s favorite! However, that doesn’t mean all Pokémon are equally popular.

I recently shared the most popular Pokémon from each generation, according to fan votes. But I was curious about the opposite – which Pokémon have the smallest, most dedicated fan bases? So, I looked at data from a website tracking everyone’s favorite Pokémon to find the least popular one from each generation. If your favorite is on this list, you’re part of a rare group of fans!

Gen 9 – Paldea Region Least Favorite

Okay, so Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were kinda divisive, and honestly, a lot of people weren’t feeling the new Pokemon designs in the Paldea region. I mean, there were some really cute ones like Lechonk and Sprigatito, but the Paradox Pokemon… yeah, those didn’t really hit the mark for a lot of us. The future versions from Violet – Iron Boulder, Iron Leaves, and Iron Jugulis – were definitely the least popular, only getting 15 fan votes each. The prehistoric Paradox Pokemon from Scarlet did a little better, but not by much. It just feels like those designs didn’t quite land with the fanbase.

Gen 8 – Galar Region Least Favorite

When looking at the most popular Pokémon, I noticed that those from Generation 8 generally received fewer votes. This likely explains why Pokémon like Cufant and Wyrdeer, both with only 18 votes, ended up near the bottom. However, I’m not surprised by which Pokémon from Pokémon Sword and Shield was the least popular. Barraskewda, often called the Skewer Pokémon, received the fewest votes with just 17, while its earlier form, Arrokuda, was liked by 21 fans.

Gen 7 – Alola Region Least Favorite

The Pokemon Sun and Moon games introduced a lot of creative new Pokemon, including regional forms and the unique Ultra Beasts. While Generation 7 had some really strange designs, one Pokemon stands out as the least popular: Cosmoem. This is the middle evolution of Cosmog, and only 18 fans seem to love it. Those who do like Cosmoem appreciate its cute, space-themed appearance, but most players quickly evolve it into Solgaleo or Lunala, so it’s not a Pokemon many people keep around for long.

Gen 6 – Kalos Region Least Favorite

The Kalos region recently reappeared in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but it was originally explored in Pokemon X and Y. Generation 6 also introduced Mega Evolution, giving several Pokemon exciting new forms, alongside a number of brand new species. However, one new Pokemon, Bincle – a Rock and Water type known as the Two-Handed Pokemon – hasn’t been a fan favorite. To be honest, it’s not a personal favorite of mine either, so I’m not surprised. Still, a big shout-out to the 24 people who do love it!

Gen 5 – Unova Region Least Favorite

For years, Pokémon fans have been hoping for remakes of the Pokémon Black and White games, but they haven’t been announced yet. Interestingly, while many now look back on the Unova region with fondness, the Legendary Pokémon from those games aren’t the most popular. Tornadus is the least favorite, with only 16 fans, closely followed by Thundurus with 18.

Gen 4 – Sinnoh Region Least Favorite

The Sinnoh region introduces another Pokémon that seems to suffer from being a middle evolution – that awkward stage between a cute first form and a powerful final form. Staravia, from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, is often considered the least popular Pokémon in its evolutionary line, falling between the charming Starly and the more dramatic Staraptor. I personally like most of the bird Pokémon designs, and Staraptor is one of my favorites, so I think Staravia only received 26 votes because players don’t usually spend much time with these intermediate evolutions.

Gen 3 – Hoenn Region Least Favorite

The games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire introduced the Hoenn region and a whole new generation of Pokemon. They also gave us Mudkip, who’s become a popular meme and even appears in Pokemon Concierge as a cute character. However, one of my favorite Pokemon from this generation, Meditite, doesn’t seem to be very popular with fans. Surprisingly, it ranks as the least liked Gen 3 Pokemon, with only 17 votes – even below the less appealing Carvanha and Gorebyss. This adorable Psychic-type really deserves more love!

Gen 2 – Johto Region Least Favorite

I think Johto is probably my favorite Pokémon region, mostly because I have such great memories of playing Pokémon Crystal. It also added two new Eeveelutions and a strong new set of starter Pokémon. As for the least popular Pokémon from Generation 2, that would be Tyrogue. It was added as a baby Pokémon, a pre-evolution of Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee from the first generation. I’ve never really liked Tyrogue, and it seems like others don’t either—it currently has only 19 favorites.

Gen 1 – Kanto Region Least Favorite

Kanto is the region where the Pokemon journey began, and it’s a nostalgic favorite for many fans, including me. While everyone has a favorite of the original 151 Pokemon, one inevitably ends up being the least popular. That Pokemon is Tentacool, the jellyfish Pokemon. It’s a little scary-looking, which probably explains its smaller fanbase compared to other Pokemon from Kanto. Spearow comes in a close second as the least loved, likely because of the memorable scene where a flock of them relentlessly chased Ash in the very first episode of the anime.
