The upcoming live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, now titled The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will no longer be released in theaters. Instead, it will premiere exclusively on Paramount+. This decision comes as Nickelodeon celebrates the 20th anniversary of the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, and after forming Avatar Studios with the original creators to develop new content, including movies and shows. The film, which had faced some production delays, was originally scheduled to debut next October.
Originally planned for a theatrical release in October 2026, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will now premiere exclusively on Paramount+. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this change is part of a larger strategy to make Paramount+ the primary platform for all future projects from Avatar Studios, including the upcoming series Avatar: Seven Havens. This news will likely disappoint fans who were looking forward to seeing the film in theaters.
What Happens to New Avatar Movie Now?

The new movie, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, picks up after the events of the original animated series, showing an older Aang that fans haven’t seen before. Originally planned for release in theaters on October 9, 2026, it will now premiere sometime in October 2026 on Paramount+. However, moving it to streaming feels like a downgrade.
Recent reports indicate Paramount is shifting its focus when it comes to theatrical releases—and even considered buying Warner Bros.—and it appears the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie is affected by these changes. While it’s positive the film will be released in some form rather than being scrapped entirely, skipping a theatrical release significantly reduces the impact of making it a feature film.
What to Know for The Legend of Aang Movie
The shift away from traditional movie theaters has left many details uncertain, but new voice actors have been announced for the project. Joining Eric Nam (Aang), Steven Yeun (Zuko), Dave Bautista, Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, and Román Zaragoza are Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Peta Sergeant, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan, though their specific roles haven’t been confirmed yet.
The creators of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, are involved in the new film through Avatar Studios, working with Paramount and Nickelodeon. The movie will now be available only on Paramount+. While fans with subscriptions will be able to watch it, many are disappointed it won’t be released in theaters, especially after seeing how visually impressive it looked in previews.
