The fourth season of the show premiered on Prime Video with its first three episodes. Interestingly, this season wasn’t originally planned. It began as a single, 22-minute special funded by fans of Critical Role on Kickstarter. The special aimed to tell the story of how the group Vox Machina first came together, a story that takes place before the main series began streaming.
It’s clear our hobby has become a full-time job, and that’s not going to change. While I can’t speak for everyone, I believe we all still value the time we spend together. That connection is still really important. Running a business is a lot of hard work and can be frustrating, as Marisha Ray explained, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and enjoyable.
Critical Role Went from a YouTube Afterthought to a Multimedia TV and Gaming Juggernaut
Critical Role began in 2015 on the YouTube channel Geek & Sundry, created by actress Felicia Day. She learned that her friend, Ashley Johnson, played Dungeons & Dragons with a group of voice actors and encouraged them to broadcast their games live on the channel. The show quickly became incredibly popular, eventually surpassing all other content on Geek & Sundry. In 2019, the creators launched their own independent venture, and shortly after, a successful Kickstarter campaign led to a deal with Prime Video for their animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, and a second series, The Mighty Nein.
Like Marisha said, we feel super lucky to not only play these characters and tell their stories, but we actually get to decide what happens to them most of the time. And honestly, we totally keep the option open to throw a wrench into things whenever we want, just for the fun of it!
The Critical Role Crew, Not Prime Video, Has Control Over These Characters
As soon as we finished performing, we immediately said how much fun it was to play together again. It still feels like we’re just having fun when we play, and we haven’t lost that feeling. Jaffe mentioned that whenever they start playing, he completely forgets they’re even recording.
It’s true that many people have contributed, but it’s fantastic that role-playing games are now a popular way to connect with friends and share stories. That’s a wonderful impact to have, and I hope future generations continue to enjoy and benefit from these games, as they can really enrich people’s lives.
The Legend of Vox Machina releases new episodes on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
