As a huge fan of the books, I always remember that in The Fellowship of the Ring, Merry and Pippin were actually presented as Frodo’s closest friends initially, not Sam. If you look at the chapter ‘The Shadow of the Past,’ it specifically says that. ‘A Long-Expected Party’ shows Sam and Frodo being friendly, sure, but their really deep connection didn’t happen until they actually started their quest together. It’s interesting because at first, Sam seemed more motivated by his job as Frodo’s gardener and a sense of duty than by a genuine friendship. It really highlights how their bond developed through the journey.
J.R.R. Tolkien drew inspiration for the character of Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings from his experiences during World War I. In a 1956 letter, he explained that Sam was based on the English soldiers he served with – particularly the common soldiers and his personal assistants – whom he considered to be more grounded and admirable than himself.
In the military, a batman was a soldier who served as a personal assistant to an officer, responsible for tasks like equipment upkeep, carrying supplies, and preparing food. J.R.R. Tolkien, a former second lieutenant, believed these soldiers were the real heroes of wartime. In The Lord of the Rings, while Frodo wasn’t a soldier, Sam fulfilled a similar role, dedicatedly supporting him in every way possible.
Sam consistently looked after Frodo’s comfort. As detailed in the chapter “The Ring Goes South” of The Fellowship of the Ring, Sam packed essentials like salt and pipe-weed, as well as items Frodo had forgotten but Sam thoughtfully brought along. By taking care of these practical details, Sam freed Frodo to focus on the journey and fight the Ring’s power.
The Lord of the Rings Films Changed Sam’s Dynamic With Frodo
Between the publication of The Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson’s films, societal views on class changed a lot. Highlighting Sam’s role as a servant might have turned off today’s viewers and made Frodo appear arrogant. So, the filmmakers shifted the story’s focus from the development of a strong friendship to testing an already established one, emphasizing the unbreakable nature of their bond.
Despite the adjustments made, Sam retained the essential qualities that defined him in the book. He remained a courageous and devoted friend, ready to give up anything for Frodo’s sake. Because so many Lord of the Rings fans recognized this portrayal, Jackson and his team effectively captured Tolkien’s vision of Sam as embodying the spirit of the ideal English soldier.
