Taylor Sheridan’s latest series on Paramount+, The Madison, offers a glimpse of winter in Montana through the story of the Clyburn family, and subtly corrects a noticeable oversight from his hit show, Yellowstone. Released this spring, the six-episode series unfolded in two parts throughout March, captivating audiences with its deliberate and heartfelt storytelling.
Starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, The Madison tells the story of the Clyburn family, who move from New York City to Montana’s Madison River Valley after experiencing a devastating loss. The first season focuses on Stacy and her family as they adapt to their new life and consider making Montana their permanent home, but their journey is just beginning.
The Madison Season 2 Needs To Show Winter In Montana For The Clyburns
I was really moved by Season 1 of The Madison. After the family patriarch passed away, Stacy and everyone else moved to Montana, and it was so touching to see them all grieving together. Preston loved his land by the Madison River – he shared it with his brother, Paul – and it was clearly his sanctuary. As the season went on, you could really see Stacy starting to understand why that place meant so much to him, even after he was gone.
After a devastating loss, Stacy found the most comfort remembering her husband in the places he loved, making her former life feel hollow. Returning to New York City from Montana, her home no longer felt like a welcoming space, and she eventually moved back to the West, where she decided to stay.
Although Paramount+ has confirmed a second season of The Madison, the show will likely continue to explore Stacy’s struggle with grief after losing her husband. She’ll also face the challenges of learning to live off the land in Montana. As Yellowstone demonstrates, establishing a home there is incredibly difficult, particularly with winter on the way.
Whether Stacy can truly make Montana her home depends on how well she adjusts to the changing seasons. She handled the warmer weather fine, but the real challenge will be seeing if she can thrive through the cold Montana winters. As the weather gets colder, it will become clear if she can truly become a Montanan.
Taylor Sheridan Never Showed Winter In All Five Seasons Of Yellowstone
Even though harsh winters would naturally create difficulties for the Dutton family as they deal with ranch life and conflicts in Yellowstone, the show surprisingly never features winter at all. The series covers a period of time, but viewers only ever see the family during the warmer parts of the year in Montana.
While Sheridan didn’t fully test the Duttons’ resilience, hardship and loss still find them on Yellowstone. The show only features one brief winter scene. A flashback reveals Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol) explaining menstruation to young Beth (Kylie Rogers) on Christmas morning.
Winter in Montana always adds drama, and that’s especially true in the prequel to Yellowstone. The story follows the Dutton family, led by Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren), as they struggle through one of the harshest winters the area has ever seen. The extreme cold and its impact on everything around them are central to the entire plot.
Montana winters are harsh, and it would be compelling to feature that cold in the second season of The Madison. It would be a great way to test Stacy and really challenge her determination to stay close to her husband’s refuge. Unlike Yellowstone, which often avoids showing the difficult winter months, The Madison could fully embrace them and make them a key part of the story.
Elle Chapman, who plays Paige McIntosh on the show, mentioned on Instagram that filming is expected to wrap up around the end of 2025. It seems likely the family will decide whether to spend their first winter in Montana before then, and with filming happening late in the year, it’s possible they might.
