The new movie, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, is performing poorly at the box office, setting a new low for the Star Wars franchise. While the characters were popular in the three-season Disney+ series, that popularity didn’t translate to movie theaters. Despite being the first Star Wars film in seven years and the twelfth live-action movie in the series, it opened with disappointing numbers and has continued to decline. Although it debuted at number one, its opening weekend revenue of $81.7 million was the lowest ever for a Star Wars film, and it quickly fell to third place the following week.
According to Deadline, The Mandalorian and Grogu is projected to earn just $10 million domestically over the three-day weekend. That’s a significant drop of 59% from last weekend, and it’s expected to fall to sixth place at the box office. This is the quickest any Star Wars film has dropped out of the top five since its release.
The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s Fate is Out of Its Hands

For The Mandalorian and Grogu to succeed, it needed a huge opening weekend, but it only earned $81.7 million, which put its future in doubt. However, the film faced an unexpected challenge from Obsession, a surprise hit released the week before. Positive word-of-mouth quickly boosted Obsession‘s popularity, and with lukewarm reactions to the new Star Wars movie, audiences flocked to see what the buzz was about, quickly surpassing The Mandalorian and Grogu at the box office.
The movie Backrooms had a surprisingly strong opening weekend, exceeding all expectations after starting as a popular YouTube series. Both Backrooms and Obsession proved to be hits with audiences, even causing The Mandalorian and Grogu to drop further down the box office charts, despite appealing to different viewers. In just two weeks, Backrooms has earned $135 million domestically, nearly matching the $155.8 million total of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
To make matters worse, Masters of the Universe aimed for the same audience as Star Wars, and although it also flopped on its opening weekend, it took over IMAX screens from The Mandalorian and Grogu, further reducing their earnings. With Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day and Toy Story 5 both scheduled for release in the coming weeks, The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe are unlikely to improve their performance in what’s already shaping up to be a crowded 2026 summer movie season.
