Among Us Showrunner Explains How Cartoon Network’s Infinity Train Influenced The Series

I was really surprised at Summer Games Fest this year when Paramount announced they weren’t just showing off some new clips from Among Us: The Animated Series, but were releasing the entire first season – all ten episodes – on Paramount+ right away! And the cast is fantastic, with big names like Elijah Wood, Yvette Nicole Brown, Patton Oswalt, and Dan Stevens. It turns out the show’s creator, Owen Dennis, has a great background in animation. He previously worked on Regular Show and created the popular Infinity Train for Cartoon Network, and he said those experiences really shaped how he approached this new series.

Dennis explained that his experience with Cartoon Network shows like Infinity Train and Regular Show greatly influenced his work on Among Us. He noted that Regular Show’s fast-paced production schedule taught him the importance of hitting specific story beats. Both shows also encouraged him to subvert expectations, an approach he carried over to Among Us. This was just the beginning of Dennis’s discussion about transitioning from Cartoon Network to Paramount+.

The Among Us Train is Rolling

Dennis explained that the narrative approach of Among Us shared more similarities with Infinity Train than with Regular Show. He pointed out that Regular Show typically reset each episode, while Infinity Train focused on the lasting consequences of characters’ choices. They aimed to bring that same sense of consequence and character-driven storytelling to Among Us, creating a larger, emotionally resonant mystery that unfolds throughout the game.

In addition to his work on the popular game Among Us, Owen Dennis also revisited the Cartoon Network universe by contributing to several episodes of the spin-off, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes. Although it’s unknown exactly which episodes he worked on, Dennis has a strong background with the characters Mordecai and Rigby. Having been a storyboard artist for the original Regular Show from seasons four to eight, he was a natural fit for The Lost Tapes.

If you’re unfamiliar, Among Us initially gained popularity as an online multiplayer game centered around a clever system of hidden roles and deduction. The game and now the animated series both involve characters trying to identify a hidden alien impostor. However, the series gives each character a much more developed personality.
