The Mask Sequel with Jim Carrey Chances Officially Addressed by Original Director

Many people love The Mask, and it’s still considered one of the best comic book movies of the 1990s. The film, based on the 1991 Dark Horse comic by Mike Richardson, John Arcudi, and Doug Mahnke, centers on Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey), a shy bank employee who finds a magical mask connected to the mischievous god Loki. Wearing the mask transforms him into a green-faced prankster with the power to change anything around him. The Mask was a great opportunity for Jim Carrey to showcase his physical comedy skills and helped solidify his rising fame after Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. It was also a surprisingly complex role for him at the time.

A follow-up film, Son of the Mask, was made without Jim Carrey or the original director, Chuck Russell. Recently, while talking to ComicBookMovie, Russell discussed the possibility of another Mask sequel starring Carrey. He said people often ask him about it and he’d be happy to return if Carrey were involved, but a new film isn’t currently in development. He described the idea as ‘lovely,’ though.

What Are the Chances of a Sequel to The Mask?

It’s highly unlikely we’ll ever see a sequel to The Mask starring Jim Carrey. Director Chuck Russell was well-known for his popular cult films, including a 1988 remake of The Blob which is considered one of the best horror remakes of the 80s, alongside films like The Thing and The Fly. He also directed Dream Warriors, often considered the strongest sequel in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. He recently spoke with ComicBookMovie to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his action film Eraser, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Since directing The Scorpion King, Russell hasn’t directed many films – only four since 2002, and they’ve all been relatively small-budget action or horror projects. Meanwhile, Jim Carrey has shifted away from being a major Hollywood star, choosing roles only when a film truly appeals to him. In recent years, his only appearances have been in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. He hasn’t led a big Hollywood production since Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, with his last starring role being in the independent film Dark Crimes in 2016.

The original Mask movie was well-received by critics and later gained a dedicated fan base, but its sequel wasn’t successful. Though there’s been discussion about a revival with the original actors, nothing has materialized beyond talk. Jim Carrey mentioned in a 2024 interview with ComicBook that he’d be open to returning, but only if the concept was strong. Cameron Diaz echoed that sentiment in 2025, stating she would participate if Carrey was involved.
