The Matrix 5 Can Settle a Controversial Debate About the Most Powerful Character

A fifth Matrix movie is confirmed! While details about the plot are still scarce, the new film has the potential to definitively answer a long-standing question: who is the most powerful character in the series? For years, Keanu Reeves’ character, Neo, has been seen as the strongest, thanks to his unique ability to control the Matrix. But the last film, The Matrix Resurrections, introduced a new contender, challenging Neo’s position as the ultimate power within the Matrix universe.

After nearly twenty years, the popular Matrix series returned in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections. Now, Warner Bros. is planning another Matrix film, but this time without the Wachowskis at the helm. Drew Goddard, known for his work on Cloverfield and The Cabin in the Woods, will write and direct, marking the first time someone other than the Wachowskis will lead a Matrix movie. Details about The Matrix 5 are scarce, and it’s currently unknown if Keanu Reeves will reprise his role.

The Matrix 5 Could Reveal Whether Neo Or Trinity Is More Powerful

As a huge fan of The Matrix, I can’t picture those films without Neo and Trinity – Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are those characters. So, it wasn’t shocking to see them back in the new sequel; everyone wanted to know what happened to them after the end of The Matrix Revolutions. What was a surprise, though, was seeing them completely unaware of the Matrix or the real world when they returned in The Matrix Resurrections. It was a really unexpected twist!

It turns out Neo and Trinity share a unique connection in their code, which is why they’re both special. The Analyst discovered this and used it to take over the Matrix from its original creator, the Architect, sometime after the events of the last film. Eventually, Neo finds out about this and teams up with a new group of rebels to find and wake up Trinity. Once they’re reunited, Neo and Trinity realize just how much power they have over the Matrix.

Watching Resurrections, I was really struck by how Neo and Trinity finally seemed to be on equal footing with their powers – something we’d never seen before in the Matrix universe. The movie ends with them flying off together, clearly intending to rebuild the Matrix, and it hit me that making Trinity ‘the One’ alongside Neo was a huge deal. It really suggests she’s just as powerful as he is, which is a game-changer!

A fifth Matrix movie could give Neo and Trinity the chance to truly showcase their abilities and settle the question of who is the more powerful One. They weren’t able to fully explore their powers or spend much time together in Resurrections. A new film focused on them as a team would allow for extended scenes of them using their powers and demonstrating who has greater control over the Matrix.

Instead, The Matrix 5 Should Abandon Neo’s Story Entirely

Although it would be entertaining to finally resolve the argument sparked by Resurrections, it wouldn’t make for a strong narrative. It’s difficult to say for sure who is stronger, and a film focused solely on Neo and Trinity competing with each other feels like it would only appeal to fans. Instead, The Matrix 5 should focus on new characters and move beyond Neo’s story.

The change in directors from the Wachowskis to Drew Goddard marks a significant shift for The Matrix, and it feels like the right time to conclude Neo’s storyline. After starring in four Matrix films, there are countless other stories the franchise could explore. While Resurrections’ familiar plot was somewhat understandable given its satirical take on revisiting old franchises, The Matrix can’t rely on that same approach again.

One possibility for a new Matrix film is to center the story around Trinity, which would logically follow the events of Resurrections. However, telling Trinity’s story effectively would be difficult without also featuring Neo prominently. A better approach might be for Drew Goddard to introduce a completely new cast of human rebels and move away from the original characters. Considering the Matrix universe has seen many different eras, it would be a missed opportunity to focus solely on Neo and Trinity’s story.
