Few science fiction series are as unique as The Matrix. The original 1999 film was a huge hit, changing what people expected from the genre and launching a popular and impactful franchise. Although the fourth movie, The Matrix Resurrections (released in 2021), wasn’t a major success in theaters, a fifth film was announced, with Drew Goddard slated to write and direct. Now, we’re getting our first significant news about the project, and while it’s positive, fans should temper their expectations for now.
I was chatting with Goddard recently about his upcoming film, Project Hail Mary, which comes out March 20th, and he gave me an update on The Matrix 5. He confirmed it’s still happening, but clarified that ‘in the works’ really just means he’s still writing the script. He doesn’t have a timeline for when it will be finished, so it’s definitely still a ways off!
Goddard mentioned he’s currently focused on writing and secluded from the outside world. He doesn’t know how long he’ll be working, but promises to share updates when he’s finished.
The Matrix 5 Might Just Be Worth Waiting For
Although a fifth Matrix movie is still in the works, it’s likely a ways off. The previous installment, The Matrix Resurrections, didn’t perform well – it lost money at the box office and many critics felt it relied too heavily on familiar elements and lacked the exciting action of the original films. This next film will be different, as it’s the first Matrix movie not directly created by the Wachowski sisters. Bringing in a new director could be exactly what the series needs to revitalize the franchise with a fresh perspective.
Some believe Goddard is carefully developing the story for The Matrix 5, intentionally avoiding any firm release dates. This suggests he’s focused on quality over speed, which is a good sign given the high expectations for the fifth film. Fans should be encouraged by this approach, as it indicates a commitment to making a strong and satisfying addition to the series – potentially a return to the franchise’s former glory.
Even though a fifth Matrix movie is still being made, fans of director Goddard can see his latest film, Project Hail Mary, in cinemas on March 20th.
