In the heartfelt scene of “Ironheart” titled “Karma’s a Glitch,” it appears that Marvel Studios may have reintroduced an intriguing aspect of Iron Man’s heritage into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Character Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) demonstrated her fitting role as the guardian of Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) legacy in the MCU through “Ironheart.” The series drew heavily from Stark’s past, particularly in the creation of multiple armor suits and the emergence of Ezekiel Stane (Alden Ehrenreich), the offspring of Stark’s initial adversary, the Iron Monger. However, Stark’s legacy could have been perpetuated in an unexpected manner as well.
Following a harsh battle against the Hood’s minor gang in episode 5 of Ironheart, Riri finds solace at home and turns to her mother, Ronnie (Anji White), and the NATALIE artificial intelligence (Lyric Ross) for aid. Upon Ronnie escorting Riri to her late stepfather’s garage, NATALIE displays a recollection of a young Riri dancing with Gary (LaRoyce Hawkins). This memory might be a remnant from when Riri scanned her brainwaves, potentially storing memories as well. The use of this technology in the garage may echo Tony Stark’s BARF technology from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.
In the movie “Civil War”, Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing (BARF) was unveiled during Tony Stark’s presentation at MIT. This technology, initially developed by Quentin Beck (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), for Stark Industries, enabled Stark to project a memory of his final conversation with his deceased parents, offering him a chance to bid them a proper farewell, something he couldn’t do in reality. Later on, in 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, this technology was utilized by Beck, disguised as Mysterio, to create deceptive illusions about the Elemental attacks, misleading the world.
It’s not yet clear if the depiction by NATALIE in “Ironheart” utilized the BARF tech, but considering Riri Williams’ history with Tony Stark, it could be plausible. Given her time at MIT, she might have been exposed to BARF technology and used it to create her advanced Ironheart suit. However, after her expulsion, the suit proved ineffective. NATALIE’s projection, where Gary nicknamed young Riri “Ironhead,” could simply be a recalled memory. Nonetheless, it would be exciting if the BARF tech continued to feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In spite of Gary’s tutoring and the potent influence of this recollection, Riri Williams nonetheless chose to engage in a shady and dubious agreement with the devious supervillain Mephisto, portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen. This decision may well lead to her regretting it, pushing her to tread a precarious path between being a hero and a villain, just as Stark frequently did, creating his own monsters. It’s exciting to witness the continuation of Iron Man’s Marvel Cinematic Universe legacy through Riri Williams’ character, Ironheart, with Downey Jr. scheduled to appear as Doctor Doom in 2026.
