The Most Epic Fantasy Franchise Returns With New Trailer That Promises All-Out War

Over the last decade or so, epic fantasy shows have become incredibly popular, largely thanks to the success of Game of Thrones. Every major TV network and streaming service has been trying to create their own hit fantasy series – not just to compete with Game of Thrones, but also to build franchises with potential for spin-offs, like Netflix’s The Witcher. This trend doesn’t seem to be stopping, with exciting new adaptations on the way, including Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe coming to Apple TV with a Mistborn movie and a Stormlight Archive TV series.

When it comes to popular fantasy series, especially on TV, Game of Thrones remains a standout. It really set the standard for modern fantasy and is still considered by many to be the best. Despite a controversial ending, it’s spawned two successful spin-offs: the more modest A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the action-packed House of the Dragon. The third season of House of the Dragon arrives in June, and HBO has just released a new trailer that looks incredibly impressive and exciting. You can watch the trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 below.

House Of The Dragon Season 3 Will Be An All-Out War

Season 3 of House of the Dragon promises to be incredibly ambitious, potentially surpassing even the heights of Game of Thrones. Showrunner Ryan Condal hinted to EW that one episode in particular could be “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made,” featuring the Battle of the Gullet – a massive naval conflict between the Velaryon fleet and the Triarchy. Originally intended for Season 2, this battle was moved to Season 3, and the Season 2 finale left viewers right before it began.

Within the world of the show, the upcoming sea battle is the largest and most brutal ever seen in Westeros. From a production standpoint, it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious battles ever filmed for television. It took over the entire House of the Dragon studio, requiring both traditional sets and a massive water tank – a feat overseen by producer Kevin de la Noy, known for his work on Titanic. HBO is clearly excited about it, and the trailers showcase a huge naval fleet and enormous dragons engaged in chaotic, visually stunning action. The scale of these sequences appears to be at least as grand as anything seen in Game of Thrones or on any other television show.

The Battle of the Gullet would be a massive highlight for most shows, but for House of the Dragon Season 3, it’s just the beginning. The civil war will rage on far beyond that battle. The showrunner has also teased another incredibly large-scale sequence, and two-and-a-half more that, while not quite as huge, will still be epic and action-packed, similar to what viewers loved in Game of Thrones.

The trailers have given us glimpses of upcoming battles, featuring dragons and large-scale combat scenes that feel immersive and realistic. While action will be plentiful, the show also promises to retain the thoughtful conversations and character building that made Game of Thrones so popular. It won’t be non-stop fighting, but viewers can expect a significant amount of it.

Fantasy television fans have a major event to look forward to in 2026: the premiere of House of the Dragon Season 3 on June 21st on both HBO and HBO Max. Hopefully, it will be a season to remember!
