As a fan of action movies, I’ve noticed they usually go one of two ways with their fight scenes. Some totally prioritize spectacle and create over-the-top battles that are just plain fun, even if they’re impossible. Others really try to make the fights feel realistic, like something that could actually happen, to keep the story believable and immersive.
Most people would guess the most realistic fight scene in a movie would be in an action film or a martial arts movie. However, surprisingly, the most accurate depiction of a real fight actually appears in a beloved Christmas movie.
A Christmas Story Has The Most Realistic Movie Fight Scene, According To Experts
I recently revisited A Christmas Story, released back in 1983, and it still holds up. The film centers around young Ralphie Parker, brilliantly played by Peter Billingsley, and his hilarious misadventures during the holiday season. One particularly memorable scene involves Ralphie getting relentlessly picked on by the neighborhood bully, Scut Farkus – Zack Ward does a fantastic job portraying that truly awful kid. It all culminates in Ralphie finally snapping and unleashing a furious beating on Scut, only stopping when his mom intervenes to pull them apart. It’s a surprisingly satisfying moment, and a key part of what makes the movie so charming.
Though it’s definitely not an action movie, the fight scene between Ralphie and Farkus in A Christmas Story has surprisingly been praised by fight experts as incredibly realistic. MMA coach Ramsey Dewey called it “raw, real, and how fights actually happen,” and Marcus Torgerson from Skillset went even further, calling it “the most realistic fight scene I have ever seen.”
While A Christmas Story wasn’t striving for realistic fight choreography, and its star, Peter Billingsley, didn’t undergo martial arts training, that’s perfectly fitting. Most real fights aren’t polished battles between skilled opponents. They’re usually clumsy struggles where people simply grapple or, like in the movie, one person overpowers the other with raw force rather than technique.
Most fight scenes aren’t enjoyable to watch; they often appear clumsy and immature. Surprisingly, A Christmas Story captures the awkwardness of real fights better than many action movies.
Interestingly, A Christmas Story might explain why action movies often prioritize style over realism. Realistic fight scenes, like the one in the film, would be funny rather than exciting in franchises like Fast & Furious and James Bond. Action movies need a bit of exaggeration to create thrilling moments, while A Christmas Story aimed for something different.
