Okay, so the buzz is definitely building – it seems like Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz might be coming back as Rick and Evie in a new Mummy movie! For months, rumors have been swirling about a fourth film, and it looks like those two could be dusting off their adventurer hats. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen them tackle ancient curses, and honestly, I’m cautiously optimistic about this potential revival.
The rumors are true: Universal Pictures has officially set a release date for the movie – May 19, 2028.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known together as Radio Silence, will direct the new movie. David Coggeshall, who wrote the screenplay for ‘Orphan: First Kill’, penned the script, but details about the story are currently being kept under wraps.
We anticipate new actors will join the cast for this upcoming installment, and we’ll be watching for announcements about who gets the roles soon.
It’s been 18 years since Brendan Fraser last played adventurer Rick O’Connell, in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Rachel Weisz didn’t return for that film and was replaced by Maria Bello as Evelyn.
Many fans still love the first two ‘Mummy’ movies, released in 1999 and 2001, even though critics had a mixed opinion of them. The new film aims to bring back that same popular feeling.
Brendan Fraser has seen a major comeback in his career, highlighted by his Oscar win for The Whale. It’s therefore fitting that his well-loved series is now coming to theaters.
In a recent interview with Empire, directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett discussed how their experience successfully rebooting the Scream franchise could inform their approach to this new project. They emphasized that they only take on existing franchises if they feel a genuine connection to the material – it has to be something special.
Gillett added that the script really delivers on all fronts, describing it as beautiful, expansive, frightening, and enjoyable.
Let’s hope it lives up to that promise!
