I used to think live-action anime adaptations were a guaranteed disaster. Remember how poorly received things like the Dragon Ball Evolution, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and Attack on Titan movies were? It felt like that kind of thing just wouldn’t work. But things have really turned around! Now, a popular movie series is about to release its fifth live-action film, and the new trailer is giving us a great look at what’s in store for Li Xin and all the characters in this action-packed world. It’s exciting to see how far things have come.
The popular manga series Kingdom has been a huge success globally, though it hasn’t gained quite as much traction in North America. Since its launch in 2006 by Yasuhisa Hara, the series has been consistently published in Weekly Young Jump. It’s no surprise that Kingdom has now been adapted into a live-action film series, with four movies already released. The latest installment, Kingdom: Decisive Battle of the Soul, will premiere in Japan on July 17th. Distributor Toho has just released a new trailer offering a preview of the film’s adaptation of “The Battle of Hangu Pass.” You can watch the trailer below.
What Lies in Wait For Kingdom?
If you’re unfamiliar with Kingdom, it’s a story that brings famous battles from Chinese history to life with an action-packed anime style, similar to Vinland Saga. The new live-action movie, Decisive Battle of The Soul, features the kingdoms of Yan, Han, Wei, Chu, and Zhao joining forces as the “Coalition Army” to oppose the powerful state of Qin. This storyline is considered a high point in both the manga and anime, so the movie adaptation has a challenge ahead to successfully bring these epic events to the screen.
Japanese films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc have found success in the U.S., but the Kingdom movies haven’t had the same theatrical impact here, despite being popular in Asia. Fortunately, you can now watch the live-action Kingdom films on Netflix, which is clearly responding to the demand for anime adaptations. For fans of the Kingdom anime, a new season is expected to arrive either later in 2024 or early 2027, though an official release date hasn’t been announced yet.
